BUILT-IN LOOK—WaII units concealing storage and
two separate work areas are provided in this creative
living room for a couple. A pair of etegeres with
Wall units
By BARBARA HARTUNG
Q. My husband and 1 are
moving into a new apart-
ment that has a fairly
large living room, kitchen
and one bedroom.
We do a considerable
amount of work at home,
although we both have of-
fices tbat we go to each
day. The work that we
bring home, however,
posed a problem for us in
our smaller, more
cramped apartment.
We want to plan careful-
ly to accommodate work-
ing at home and not having
always to pick op in the
middle of our work. Please
suggest some arrangement
that would help us.
We--would-_prefer-not-to -
go 10 any great expense
constructing built-in
shelves or furniture be-
cause we will . probably
only be here two or three
years. — R.B.

be money ahead if you

Probably your best solu-
tion is to first sketch out
various plans on paper.
When you think you have a
good plan, cut out shapes of
the furniture from newspa-
per and tape to the floor.
This will help you visualize
space and use of the room
before you make expensive
purchases.
Q. I need lighting in my
entry area which formerly
had wall sconces. I've re-
moved the sconces to give
the entry a more contem-
porary look and because I
breakfront
The breakfront really
dominates the space. The
only other walls are small
and have tall plants
against them.
What would be inviting
and effective for lighting
the space? — R.M.
A. If your breakfront is
'Rot lighted on the interior
you might consider install-
ing tiny fluorescent tubes
under the shelves to direct
the light down on the arti-
cles of your shelves.' This
could be effective because
it would highlight various
accessories you might like
to show off. It would also
provide soft, unobtrusive
lighting in the space.
Also you might consider
small canister -type lights
that you could put on the
floor to throw light up
through your tall plants to
dramatize them. Or tract
lighting on the ceiling can
be effective by throwing
light down — some on the
plants and some on the
breakfront. If you can have
the tract lighting on a
dimmer, you can more eas-
ily control the intensity.
Water's cycle long
It can take as long as
several thousand years for
water to complete its cycle
of falling as rain, subter-
ranean percolation to an
aquifer and emergence as
natural spring water.

If you're a Scot you may
have heard _of Margaret
Struth. But even then, it's not
likely. Margaret makes kilts
for Burnett's Scottish Im-
ports. It's nliit likely you've
even heard of Burnett's
either. The company oper-
ates out of a few rooms on a
side street in Barrie.
But get this! Burnett's is
eensidered the biggest sup-
plier of kilts, bagpipes, and
accessories on the continent!
And Margaret Struth al-
though she's still in her 20s,
hmade kilts for royalty,
and is one of the best in the
business!
Burnett's is one of those
off -beat, surprising places
you find scattered around
the countryside. The com-
pany was started 12 years
ago by a Scot named Bill
Burnett and his wife. Until
two years ago they imported
ready-made kilts from Scot-
land. They "imported" Mar-
garet, as they put it.
Struth served her five year
apprenticeship at the famed
Anderson of Edinburgh. She
became an outstanding kilt
maker, and made kilts for
Princess Anne and Prince
Charles. To get her to come
to Canada, Bill made her
managing director of the
company.
Margaret has a small
staff, but she personally cuts
all the 500 or so kilts the firm
turns out every year. Near
the workroom there are
close to a 1,000 different
types of tartans packed into
10 foot high shelves. It takes
eight yards of tartan to make
a kilt.
In another room, there are
all kind§' of accessories on
displayJncluding bagpipes,
jabot—blouses; -velvet, -vest.
ricott"rsii jeivelrety. _; .
A custom-made kilt costs
$300. But the big business is
in bands. The firm supplies
45 pipe bands in Canada and
the United States with equip-
ment. Outfitting a band costs
about $85,000.
So when you hear the skirl
of the pipes and see the
swing and sway as the Scot-
tish swagger down the
avenue, it could be that their
kilts were t'flArde in a little
plant on aside street in
Barrie.

Craft Talk

Two requests in the mail
this week for a knitted bed-
spread. One lady wanted to
knit a woollen bedspread,
which as she says, would
double up as a blanket and
make a nice gift for a couple
getting married this fall. The
other lady would like to knit
one of cotton, as a gift for her
granddaughter's wedding.
I was happy to supply both
of these patterns. No. 0677 is
a lacy stitch knitted bed-
spread made in strips, fairly
quick and easy to knit with a.
knitting worsted weight of
yarn or sayelle and 7 mm or
No. 2 needles. Both single
and double bed size direc-
tions are given on the leaflet.
One or two of these, bed-
spreads knitted in white or a
pretty pastel color will make
a lovely gift either for a wed-
ding, or a couple acquiring
their own house or home..,
The other bedspread I sig- -
gested:was--knitwith cotton,
No. 7060, worked in squares
on 2 mm or No. 13 steel knit-
ting needles. This one would
take a little longer time, and.
would be an heirloom to hand
down to future generations
since they last forever. The
knitted squares are easily
portable, and you may find
that this is just the hand
work you will want to take
along during the summer
months. Both double and sin-
gle bed size also are given
for this design.
No. 0581 is a crocheted
bedspread, using a double
knitting weight of yarn or
sayelle. This design is cro-
cheted in squares and then
assembled either into a sin-
gle or double bedspread.

By PHYLLIS WEAVER
Did you know that most of
our holiday celebrations can
be traced to pagan times?
When Christianity was a
new religion and, its mem-
bers tortured for attending
services, survival meant,
"Don't fight it, join 'em." So
Christian festivals were de-
liberately made coincident
with pagan celebrations.
Christ's birth was cele-
brated on the Roman legion-
naires' least popular holi-
day, Mithra's birthday, at
the winter solstice (though
scholars tell us that Christ
was born in spring).
Epiphany, or 12th day of
Christmas, was made coin-
cident with Osiris' birthday,

inquiring about a full-length
knitted coat, preferably with
raglan sleeves. I have just
such a design on Leaflet No.
6729, which is knit with a
mohair type of yarn. This is
a classic style with bracelet

given are`for 12 through 18
for bust sizes 32 up to and
including 38 inches.

As I have been speaking
about bedspreads, I thought
I would feature a crocheted
one this week. This is one of
the prettiest and daintiest
ones that I have seen in a
long time, yet one that would
be so simple to make. The
crochet motif squares are
quickly and easily crocheted
in cotton, and it's a portable
take -along work for the
summer months. If you have
a close friend or relative get-
ting married in the near
future,.they will never forget
you with a gift like this.
