The Wingham Advance-Times, 1983-05-18, Page 101 Page 10—The Wingham Advance -Times, May 18, 1983 Two generations of figure skaters, who learned their craft under the patient tutelage of Shorty Brooks, are this week mourning the death of a man who eon- tributed much to life in Wingham. Harold Brooks passed away Saturday, May 14, at the Wingham and District Hospital in his 79th year. Harold Brooks, who through the years had earned the affectionate nickname Shorty, was born May 5, 1905, in Oldham, England. With his parents, the late Harold Brooks and Mary Hannah Hulse, he came to this country in 1910, residing m Toronto where Shorty received his education. In 1929, Shorty married the former Cora Pearl Stacey and in 1940, they came to this area where he secured employment with Fry and Blackhall as a cabinet maker. He retired from that work about ten years ago. In 1952, Shorty Brooks was instrumental m starting the Wingham Figure Skating Club. He went on to become pro instructor of the club for more than 25 years and is fondly remembered by the children who shared his love of skating and learned a great deal from him. He also initiated the original workshop for mentally retarded adults in Wingham. At the time of his passing, home to Shorty Brooks was 286 Minnie Street. Shorty's wife passed away Born in E. Wawanosh, Walkerton doctor dies Dr. J. T. H. (Harold) Robinson of Walkerton died at Brucelea Haven on Sunday, May 9, 1983, in his 89th year. Born in East Wawanosh ----Township on -May --6F11325; be - was the son of. William and Ann Robinson. After elementary school, he worked on the family farm until 1914 when he went to Wingham to get his secondary school diploma. He then entered the University of Toronto and received his degree in medicine in 1924. The following year he began to practice medicine at Walkerton, where he con- tinued to serve the com- munity until he suffered a severe stroke in 1973. Dr. Robinson was very active within the medical sphere as chief of staff at the Bruce County Hospital, secretary of the Bruce County Medical Society and a director of the Ontario Medical Association. He served as county coroner and as medical doctor to the county jail and to Brucelea Haven. The first Christmas Seal campaign in Walkerton was organized by Dr. Robinson, and he was instrumental in forming the Bruce County TB Association. In 1965, the County of Bruce Hospital honoredd-hhn-with--an- award - of merit for 40 years of active practice. As a church elder, member of the choir and Sunday School super- intendent, Dr. Robinson served St. Paul's United Church faithfully. He was also a longtime member of the Saugeen Masonic Lodge and recipient of a 50 -year pin. He is survived by his wife Sadie (Bremner) and three children, Mrs. John (Sylvia) Dunn, Dr. Campbell (Sally) Robinson and Mrs. Donald (Ann) Thompson, as well as 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He also is survived by a sister, Annie Kilpatrick of Lucknow, and brother,. Wilfrid of Dryden, as well as several cckusins'in the Wingham area. Funeral services were held at St. Paul's church May 11, with interment in the Walkerton cemetery. Kenneth R. Hastie dies in Listowel The death occurred in Listowel Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, May 11, of Kenneth Robert Hastie of Gorrie. He was in his 79th year. Born May 2, 1905, in' Howick Township, Mr. Hastie was a son of the late Robert Lunan Hastie and Emma Victoria Smith. He was a member of the Gorrie United Church and Forest Lodge AF & AM No. 162, Wroxeter. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, the former Lillian Gertrude Earls, whom he married October 9, 1929; three daughters, Mrs. Edith Blythe of Sauble Beach, Mrs. Robert (Marie) Strong, RR 1, Gorrie, and Mrs. Keith (Margaret) Finnigan, Dorchester; two sons, Robert of Gorrie and Thomas, Woodbridge; 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. There are two brothers, John C. Hastie of California and Walker H. (Doan) Hastie, Gorrie; and one sister, Mrs. Milton (Jessie) Smith of Pefferlaw. He was predeceased by one brother, Alex. The late Kenneth Hastie rested at the Gorrie Chapel of M. L. Watts Funeral Homes where friends paid their respects Thursday and Friday. Brothers from Forest Lodge conducted a memorial service in the chapel on Friday evening at nine o'clock. Funeral service was conducted by Rev. Lloyd Martin at two o'clock on Saturday, with interment following in Wroxeter Cemetery. Pallbearers were Earle King, Art Gibson, Tom O'Krafka, Murray McLean, Eldred Cathers and Jim Wylie. Honorary pallbearers were Jack Leppington, Alex Graham, John Koch and Cloyne Michel. Floral tributes were carried by five grandsons, .Ken Blythe, Kevin Hastie, Kent Strong, Michael Finnigan and Doug Hastie. As expressions of sym- pathy, donations may be made to the Gorrie United Church Memorial Fund. Service for Mrs. Johnston The last surviving member of the family of Donald MacDonald, Mrs. Annie Elizabeth Johnston of RR 2, Bluevale, passed away Sunday, May 8, at Wingham and District Hospital in her 92nd year. The former Annie ElizabethMacDonald, she was predeceased by her father, her mother, the former Sarah MacAdam, three brothers, one sister and two half sisters. Her husband, William Alexander (Sandy) Johnston, prede- ceased her in 1958. Mrs. Johnston was born in Grey Township. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ross (Wilma) Higgins, RR 5, Brussels, one son, John of RR 2, Bluevale, and four grandchildren. The late Mrs. Johnston rested at the Brussels Chapel of M. L. Watts Funeral Homes where complete funeral and committal service was held May 10 at 3:30. Interment followed in Brussels Cemetery. ny in 1975. He was predeceased by one son, Harold Albert. A memorial service was conducted on Monday, May 16, at three o'clock at The Currie -Walker Funeral Home, Wingham, by Rev. Paul L. Mills of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Cre- mation followed, with inter- ment of ashes in Wingham Cemetery at a later date. Mrs. Lloyd Martin conducts worship WROXETER --- In the absence of Rev. Lloyd Martin who was attending Conference, his wife oc- cupied the pulpit in the United Church here on Sunday and chose the Old Testament scripture from Psalm 8 and the New Testament reading from Matthew, chapters 8 and 9. Her sermon was "The Personal Touch". The choir, with Mrs. Betty Wright at the organ and Gordon Kaster and Tharon Riley on guitars, sang "Try a Little Kindness". Close to $1,800 raised by Howick for the Red Cross GORRIE — Canvassers in three areas collected $1,795.55 for the Howick branch of the Canadian Red Cross, surpassing the quota of $1,700. Of that amount, Gorrie donated $1,142.55; Fordwich, $408., and Wroxeter, $245. The latest club was called "Ontario's Heritage" and the three girls in front, Brenda Martin, Sandra Thompson and Joanne Shaw all received county honors for having completed six clubs. Provincial honors were presented to back, Elaine Campbell and Muriel Huth, while Debora Smith and Darlene Wattam each received recognition for having completed 18 clubs.
