By COLLE'i°I'E BOUCIIEZ Up until recently if you stopped any woman on the street and asked her who the sexiest man on the ten- nis circuit is, she may very well have answered Bjorn Borg or Vitas Gerulaitis or even Jimmy Connors. But suddenly along came last season's premiere of "DY- NASTY" (the night-time creme de la soap) and all that changed. Instantly, the 'sexiest and . most sought after "tennis pro," both on and off the courts became GEOFFREY SCOTT, aka Mark Jennings. As "Dynasty's" contribu- tion to outdoor (not to men- tion indoor) sports, the character of Jennings romanced three of the most beautiful women on prime time (namely JOAN COLLINS, LINDA EVANS and PAMELA S E MAR- TIN), and in the process stole the hearts of an entire female audience, mine in- cluded! With his rugged good looks and romantic appeal, Geoffrey has cer- tainly elevated the idea of taking tennis lessons to a new height. "I really do play tennis," says the actor who you may remember as the heart throb in the "I'd walk a mile for a Camel" ciga- rette ads, as well as for his feature roles on "The Vir- gin)an" and 'Concrete Cow- bylYs" with JERRY REED. "But," he continues, "I re- ally think of myself as an actor playing a part and not a tennis pro trying to act. In fact, I probably played better before I was on the show because I had more time to practice." Although he now spends more time on the set and less time winning one, Geoffrey does believe that exercise is the key to stay- ing in shape. "Fin not a real health nut," he confides, "but I do know that without exercise the rest of it makes little sense. No matter how many vitamins,you take or how much °health food' you eat, without a regular dis- ciplined program of ex- ercise it's almost like wast: ing your time on the other things." When he has time, this heart throb does enjoy playing tennis, skiing and golfing, but he does play them strictly for sport. When it really comes down, to getting in shape, running is his forte. "I do think moderation is important," he continues "and if you're out of shape it's wrong to do too much at once. You can't expect to run a mile right away ... you'll feel awful and g discouraged. Start by just walking a mile and then run maybe an eighth of a mile. And if you can, bal- ance it with some yoga or calisthenics to get you in shape. The more you make exercise a part of your life," he concludes, "the less of a chore it seems. Once you start and pass the two-week mark, it gets a lot easier to make it a part of your life." When it comes to ex- ercise of the heart, Geof- frey's fantasies include lots of romance, but his idea of the ideal SUPER BEAUTY is as varied as there are women in the world. "I guess I'm a romantic in my fantasies more than I am in real life," he confesses. "I do love to bring flowers and beautiful gifts, and I like the idea of candlelit suppers ... I just don't do it as much as I'd like to. But, I do believe that if a man and woman are in love they should spend a lot of time togeth- er ... and I guess that's a pretty romantic notion." And just what kind of "woman brings out the ro- mance in Geoffrey Scott's soul? "It's a chemistry," he says, "it's something in her eyes that just draws me in ... and to label her as hav- ing to look a specific way is wrong. I don't think we ever really know what at- tracts us to somebody be- cause attraction itself is still such a mystery. And even if you have in your mind, a certain fantasy of the way you'd like a woman to look, in reality you can be attracted to someone who looks alto- gether different. These are the kinds of things that attract me the most. "In reality," he con- cludes, "what is a picture ... a car ... a house? They're all lines and its just a mat- ter of moving those lines around until you find a shape that's appealing to you. You take a wonian's body, which artists have long said is a true object of art and it's really just a line that curves. And what's fascinating is that every guy has his own in- terpretation of that curve. The line is as varied as one can draw it. And from 360 degrees ... that's an awful lot of possibilities! "And still the ideal 'line' is really all wrapped up in the mental process of re- lating to one another and the chemistry that happens when you do. "Yeah," he says thought - GEOFFREY SCOTT "Man of the Month" fully, with a mysterious smile on his lips, "it's something in her eyes that just takes me away." Backgammon By Ward This position illustrates a common kind of mistake. The wrong play in this case is to make the bar -point (7 -point) with 10/7, 8/7. Much better is 13/10, 24/23. There are a couple off problems with making the bar -point. First, the bar -point is not very effective for blocking pur- poses in this position. It is too close to the 5 -point to be of much help in containing O's back checkers. Since it is not a point in X's home board, the bar -point cannot help keep O's checkers from entering the case of a future hit. Second, making the bar -point leaves X with a bad distribu- tion of checkers. All of this points are either stripped (with- out extra men), or contain too many men. All six of X's builders wind up on just two points: the 13 and the 6. As a result, X will find that most of his rolls play awkwardly — achieving nothing constructive while often leaving dangerous blots. . Making the 10 -point. solves most of these problems. Be- cause itis five -points in..f'ront of O's -anchor; the 10 -point -is ..... quite effective in containing O's, back men and preventing their escape.. O's man on the 1 -point is exposed to at least a double shot with any 6 roll except 6-4 and 6-5. If 0 eventually wants to move both men off the 5 -point, only 6-6 succeeds in moving both past the 10 -point on the same roll. Making the 10 -point also leaves X with a better checker distribution. Especially helpful is the fact that X puts one of the men on the 13 -point to good use. In addition, the builder on the 8 -point is still available to strengthen the home board by making the 4- and 3 -point. The advance of the back man is not a factor in coming up with the right play. Advancing this man one point neither.. strengthens nor weakens X's position. The difficulty of es- cape is about the same on either point, as is the danger of being attacked by O. Points are numbered 1 to 24, starting with X's home board at the lower left.
