The Milverton Sun 595-8921 Elmira and District News: Kim Dadson 669-2690 Especially in these stressful times, for most home owners their home and their yard are a spe- cial place of calm and re- fuge from the rigors of the outside world. Anything we can do to increase their tranquillity and grace is bound to benefit ourselves and our families. - I well remember how one of our previous yards was quickly transformed by a tall fence into a ver- dant outdoor room de- signed for pleasure and re- laxation. Beside the back door was a fragrant honeysuck- le vine, regularly visited by hummingbirds. Alongside the path to the back door was our grape arbor, under which we sat for meals at a picnic table, monitoring the bunches of grapes above us as they devel- oped, feeling very satisfied, even a bit bacchanalian. Beside the honeysuckle, against the house wall, grew our early species crocus. These were the blooms that drew the first bees of the year and for us their arrival became, over 'the years, our personal family signal that spring was approaching. There is certainly some- thing about the presence of both birds and bees in the garden that lends a spirit of soft restfulness to one's home garden. Over the years I've noticed certain plantings which seem to at- tract birds and bees. Our beebalm plants, in flower, are almost con- stantly accompanied by fat, buzzy bumblebees. An admirably easy plant, the beebalm also has pleasant- ly scented foliage, a fra- grance combining mint and sage. Sedums in bloom are usually covered with bees, too, as is lavender. Borage, the "herb of gladness," sporting long, gray -green leaves, also attracts . bees in large numbers with its nodding blue flowers. All of us who enjoy growing berries and fruits know to our dismay how many of these specimens attract the birds. Not with- out reason do many back- yard growers keep on hand large fruit tree nets to pro- tect the fruits of their labor. Some gardeners with enough space like to allow wild berry vines to grow unchecked on parts of their property, in hopes of satis- fying the birds with those. Certainly, in parts of the wooded areas on our prop- erty, the elderberries are promptly cleaned out by the birds, while our strawberries have not, so far, been touched. Recently I heard of an avid fruit gardener who cut up an old fur coat that belonged to his wife and hung the bits in his cherry trees. He reported wonder- ful results - no birds see'ned brave enough to venture near the dubious material. What I didn't hear was how his wife felt about it. An alternative method of keeping the birds happy and out of your cultivated fruits is to maintain sever- al feeding stations- with mixed seed throughout the yard. Simple platform feeders made of wood will do, placed on posts or at- tached to or hung from trees. Some claim that the birds are actually looking for water and placing shal- low containers of water nearby helps to keep them away from the fruit. I don't know whether this is true but I wouldn't be without at least one birdbath in the yard, for the whole family gets so much pleasure watching the feathered ones frolic in their bath. Small birdbaths can be made simply with any AUCTION SALE Of Galloway Cattle; Sheep, Pigs, Machinery, Truck, Trailers, Tanks, for: SUNCREST FARM CLAYTON& KATHERINE SALTER Lot 49, Con. 1, Grey Township, located7 miles west of Listowel on Hwy. 86 or first farm west of Molesworth; on: Friday, May 20, 1983 11:30 a.m. CATTLE: Consists of several Purebred Silver Dun Galloways; Lenore, cow with calf at side; Sue, cow with calf at side; Maggie, first calf heifer, due sale time; Lavern, first calf heifer, due sale time; Delila, Black Galloway heifer, shortbred (western stock); Netherbank, Black Galloway heifer, shortbred (western stock); 2' yearling Silver Dun heifers; 1 yearling Silver Dun bull; Neptune, bull 2 years old; Drifter, herd sire. A rock set in the container helps to stabilize it and gives the birds a perch. I have attracted small, insect -eating birds to nest in our yard with simple birdhouses that have a small entrance hole be- neath a large roof overhang, so bigger birds can't gain entry. Allowing some of the perennial flowers and herbs to go to seed will also give welcome food to the birds in your backyard sanctuary. The turnip NaturaIly Yours" Naturally yours. The TURNIP. FRANCIS KLEIN That's what gives that pecu- liar odor that stops most people from cooking them, but your body needs sulfur so nutritionists say, "Eat them often." While we all agree that they do have that pungent odor, they really are deli- cious when they are cooked, mashed and added to mashed potatoes. Just for a change try it with a little butter and a few herbs and spices mixed in, really pret- ty good eating. And the turnip greens - that's the tops that you usu- ally tell the grocer to take off for you. That's where the trace minerals and vitamins really abound. An average -sized turnip has only 20 calories, so dieters a make the supreme effort. Try them. Many cooks peel off the outer skin of the turnip and thinly cut or sprinkle them into fresh green dinner sal- ads.
