In the -biggest --saleever-
made to the British
Broadcasting Corporation in
one year, the Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation
has sold its miniseries,
"Empire Inc.", which
received its first showing
early this year in Canada.
The story of a Montreal
businessman whose search
for power and money un-
dermines his relationship
with people and drives him
to a life of loneliness and
bitterness, the series . was
one of the most ambitious
ever undertaken by the CBC.
Large enthusiastic audi-
ences raved about it and
critics acclaimed the per-
formances of Kenneth
Welch, Martha Henry,
Jennifer Dale and the many
supporting players.
The latest sale adds to the
list of countries that have
purchased the successful
series. It has already
become the property of
Australia, Italy, Spain, Ire-
land, Finland, Israel and
countries in the Caribbean.
Negotiations for the pur-
chase are also under way
with the U.S. It will be shown
in Britain in May.
Meanwhile, another major
sale has made many people
happy, the happiest singing
star Tommy Hunter. The
CBC has sold 26 episodes of
his show to -a cable television
company in the US. Tommy
has become an institution on
the CBC, since the days when
he was a singer on "Country
Hoedown", on which he first
appeared in 1956. He
acquired his own show in
1965 and since its beginning
it has been a favorite with
audiences. It is now
estimated that two million
viewers tune in to see the
show each Friday evening as
it has, through the years,
graduated to sparkling sets,
upbeat musical arrange-
ments and live top stars
from the Nashville world of
country music. It's been
quite a stroll for the cowboy
boots of this kid who once
sang with the CKNX Barn -
dance gang!
When Tommy is not ap-
pearing on his television
series, he maintains per-
sonal contact with his fans,
probably the major reason
his show is so popular. He
tours the country, en-
tertaining at fairs and
presenting shows for people
where they live. That means
a great deal to those who
cannot come to him during
the TV season.
Ontario border watery
Canad 's inland province
of Ontario, which shares
1,000 miles of border with
New York, Pennsylvania,
Ohio, Michigan and Minneso-
ta, has only half a mile of
international land border.
The rest is made up of inter-
connecting lakes and rivers,
primarily along the Great
Lakes system.
