It is ideal for place mats, pillows, quilt blocks, aprons, clothing and banners. The technique, also called Seminole patch- work, was originated by the Seminole Indians of Florida. After learning patchwork from the Early American settlers, the In- dians adapted the Colonial techniques to embellish their clothing with bold, geometric patterns* col- orful bands. As the name suggests, • strip patchwork relies on piecing together fabrics into long strips. The strips, in turn, are sewn into rows; the rows, into wide bands. Eventually, the wide bands combine to form fabrics. What makes strip patch- work so interesting is that the pattern possibilities are unlimited. Every time you tilt the strips, vary their widths, or turn them upside down, you have ex- citing new patterns. Here are directions for a strip patchwork place mat: MATERIALS: For two place mats: At least three colors of cotton or cotton - blend 36 -inch -width fabric; 1 yard 36 -inch -width fab- ric for place mat back po- lyester batting; four yards of bias tape; pencil; yard- stick; sewing supplies; iron.
