BILL 1
ONTARIO
In the Roman calendar,
March 15 was known as the
"Ides of March". It was an
unlucky day like Friday the
13th.
In Shakespeare's play
"Julius Caesar a sooth-
sayer, a kind of prophet,
warned Caesar to "beware
of Ides of March." Caesar
ignored the warning. But it
was the day he was assassin-
ated.
Here's the connection.
Last March 15, I went down
to the Stratford Festival
Theatrestory to do a s or about
the Ides of March. I wrote a
skit t which involved Jack
Medley who was to play
Caesar this year, Mervin
"Butch" Blake who was the
soothsayer, and myself as
Cassius, the villian of the
play.
Since it was March 15, the
director didn't want us to do
it. He said it would be un-
lucky. A theatre super-
stition.
But we talked him out of it,
went ahead with the skit and
filmed it. It turned out well
and we ran it on Global
News. Then we forgot about
it.
But later, things began to
happen. In one of the final
rehearsals, Jack Medley's
protective covering slipped,
and durin
the assassination
n
scene he was accidentally
stabbed.
He spent six weeks in hos-
pital and had to be replaced
by his understudy in the
play, James Bradford.
When he was released '
from hospital, he began
rehearsals for 'another play --~--
but was stricken by an in-
testinal --problem. -- He re-
quired two operations and
the last I heard he was still in
hospital •
All this led me to return to
Stratford last week to in-
quire further about supersti-
tions in the theatre.
1 talked to both "Butch"
Blake and James Bradford.
Blake is a Veteran actor and
told me about several
theatre superstitions. .
The one 1 fot nd ;tilbst' in'r'
terestirig" was about .Shake-'
speare's "Macbeth".
Theatre people consider it
unlucky even to mention the
name. Actors refer to it as
"that Scottish play". It
seems that something al-
ways happens to actors who
play -in "Macbeth".
And did the fact that we
did our skit on March 15 have
anything to do with Jack
Medley's bad luck?
Nobody would give me a
straight answer. But it's a
safe bet to sat that no
director will let me on .the
Stratford stage again on the
Ides of March!
Draining fields:
the broader picture
The benefits of tile drain-
age for individual farm
fields ,are well documented,
but nearly all the studies of
drainage have concentrated
on the effects on the field, not
on the overall effect on the
stream, the watershed or the
other farms in the area. Re-
searchers in the School of
Engineering at the Univer-
sity of Guelph are looking at
these aggregate effects.
What is the effect on
streamflow? What is the
effect on farms down
stream? Is water quality
affected? What happens
after heavy rainfall, or dur-
ing snowmelt periods? A
study now under way is
designed to answer some of
these questions and to pro-
vide factual data which
could aid watershed man-
agement agencies and
government departments in
developing long-term poli-
cies, programs and plans.
In one part of the study re-
searchers are measuring the
flow of water through the
main outlet tile drain from
about 75 hectares of farm
land at the Elora Research
Station. This data will be
used to chart the discharge
patterns for the entire year.
Surface water runoff is being
recorded for the same 75
hectares and detailed wea-
ther data is being collected
at the meteorological station
at the Elora Research Facil-
ity.
These inputs will be used
to develop a computer model
which will allow forecasting
of the long-term effects of in-
dividual drain outlets on
streamflow.
