If there's one thing that
flourishes in bad economic
'times, it's nepotism.
The kid who said, "I
wouldn't be caught dead
working for Dad," is driving
a company truck with Dad's
name on it. The son-in-law
who vowed, "I'm my own
man and don't forget it!"
just made his boss a grand-
father.
Some say it's the hardest
money they've ever earned.
Our kids have never work-
ed for us. We gave them an
allowance for 12 years just to
breathe in and out with some
regularity. Most of the time
they did this without com-
plaining. There were never
harsh words between us and
we were a model family
straight from "The Donna
Reed Show".
Last summer, when my
son could not find anyone
who had the basic intelli-
gence to pay him what he
was worth, my husband and
I were looking for someone
to paint our house.
It was a marriage made in
Reno.
We agreed at the top,
everything was to be on a
professional basis. The fact
that I had been in labor with
him for 15 solid hours would
have absolutely nothing to do
with what time he started
work in the mornings.
On the other hand, the fact
that he was working for
wages that would drive a
union man to stage a revolu-
tion would have nothing to do
with his running a few er-
rands for us while he was
pickingup paint.
Actually, i could never
figure out why it didn't work
out. We treated him exactly
as we would treat any pro-
fessional. We told him what
time to go to bed at nights so
he would be fresh in the
mornings. We routed him out
and forced him to eat break-
fast. Every 15 minutes, my
husband would check to see
if he had put dropcloths over
the shrubbery and taken off
the hardware around the
windows.
Every time he got a phone
call, I would tell them he
ome<j'the.service and not to
.call:anymore. I ciiklied his
clothes to make sure he
wasn't dripping paint before
he could use the bathroom,
and we paid him with a post-
dated check that would in
carcerate his parents for the
next 15 years had he cashed
it on the date it was written.
Nepotism does not work
out overnight. There's a lot
of give-and-take between the
nepotismer and the nepotis-
mee. The only case whereit
almost worked was with
Tom Sawyer when his Aunt
Polly hired him to paint a
fence. And that ended up
with his enjoying his own fu-
neral more.

In 1973 Jan Read published
a book "The Wines of Spain
and Portugal". Since then
there has been so much de-
velopment in the making and
marketing of wines in the
Iberian Peninsula that Jan
Read has decided that each
country deserves a separate
book, sonow he has pro-
duced companion volumes
"The Wines of Spain" and
"The Wines of Portugal",
with many illustrations in
black and white and in color
together with glossaries and
bibliographies.
Here are two exciting
volumes on the peninsula,
with historical and geo-
graphical notes so that even
if you are not a wine enthusi-
ast you will find much enjoy-
ment and much general in-
formation in these books.
The Spanish one contains
many quotations from 19th
century travellers like Rich-
ard Ford. The general tone
of each volume is highly
appealing and the author
presents his subject lucidly
and in impressive language.
There is a four -word
formula for success that
applies equally well to or-
ganizations or individuals —
make yourself more useful.
