I have heard that it is possible to determine the age of a horse by looking in its mouth. How is this done and how accurate if the procedure. A. It is usually possible for a knowledgeable, expe- rienced person to estimate the age of a horse by evalu- ating its teeth. However, it is not possible for anyone to tell exactly how old a horse is by simply examin- ing its teeth. The teeth only give an estimation of the horses's actual age. There are very few methods by which the exact age of a horse can readily be determined. Some breeds, for example Thoroughbreds and Stand- ardbreds, usually carry a tattoo on the inside of the lower lip that indicates the year the horse was born. Pedigrees or registration papers for any breed of horse will state the horse's birthday. One must be careful to ascertain, that the registra- tion papers•are for the horse in question. Identify- ing characteristics or a picture of the horse should be attached to the registra- tion papers. Ages of horses are often forgotten, especially if the horses have changed- own- ership. Unfortunately, for- getfulness may be inten- tional at times. In order to become adept at aging horses accu- rately, one should begin by examining the teeth of sev- eral horses of known ages. The lower center front teeth, called incisors, are used for determining the approximate age of horses. The horse has six of these;, incisor teeth. humans, the incisors erupt at fairly regular times as temporary teeth and are replaced later by perma- nent teeth. Age estimates are based on time of erup- tion of both the temporary and permanent teeth and the shape, length and de- gree of wear. ° Foals are usually born with two incisors in the lower gums. They are called nippers. If the nippers are not erupted at birth, they usually do so very soon following birth. Two more incisorserupt on either side of the nipper at approximately 4 to 6 weeks of age. These are called the intermediates. The third pair of incisors erupt at approximately 9 months of age. They are called corners. As the teeth grow from the gums they begin to show wear on their surfac- es. This wear can usually be seen on the nippers at about 1 year of age; the in- termediates at 11 years of age, and the corners at 2 years of age. At approxi- mately 21 years of age, the temporary nippers are replaced by the permanent first incisors. The tempo- rary intermediates are re- placed at 31 to 4 years and the corners at 41/2 to 5 years with permanent inci- sor teeth. A horse is said to have a full mouth at 5 years of age. This means that all of the permanent incisors have erupted. Temporary teeth are smaller than pei- manent teeth, are usually discolored, and have fur- rows on their front surfac- es. It is important to dif- ferentiate whether teeth are temporary or perma- nent whenever evaluating them. The permanent nippers start to wear at age 6; the permanent intermediates at age 7, and the perma- nent corners at age 8. The surface of the teeth changes in appearance as the teeth wear. With wear, the pulp in the center of the tooth appears and is re- ferred to as the star. The star appears in the nippers at age 8, intermediates at age 9, and the corners at age 10. The cup on the surface of the incisors disappears with age. It disappears from the nippers at age 11, intermediates at 12, and from the corners at 13. It is difficult to deter- mine the age of a horse with any degree of accura- cy after age 13. Estima- tions can be made using "Galvayne's Groove." Gal- vayne's Groove is a deep groove found on the upper corner tooth. The groove appears at the gum line at approximately 10 years of age, advances halfway down the tooth at 15, and reaches the wearing sur- face at age 20. Other crite- ria used to estimate the older horse's age include the shape of the teeth and the angle at which the teeth meet. • • • • • • • ®®®®®••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• • • • • • • • 091(Dpc), M D °°" ® maks O STROLW IN BOTI-I FEE 0 ToCLUE. c R YOUR CIRCULAR 0 a ®hB mIS ON THSWAMI) FOOT • ani s llloo0 PRINTS.
