Superintendent of pro- gram, Robert McCall, said additional teachers will be considered when the pro- gram is implemented. Director of Education John Cochrane said any additional hirings would be considered for the 9984 budget. Trustee John Elliott questioned the need to ap- prove the increase at this time and suggested approval in principle be given now and the; increase considered again next year. . "Do you have any specific areas of concern?" Trustee Joan Van den Broeck asked Mr. Elliott. "I have concern for staff- ing," responded Mr. Elliott, adding that approval in prin- ciple gives the board the op- portunity to study the budget implications of the program next year. Trustee Murray Mulvey had another concern. "If the students are having 20 minutes more French per day, is there any subject be- ing shortened?" he asked. Mr. McCall said the in- creased French time falls within the time allocated for language arts. The time allo- cated for language arts, he added is already above the time required. "The increase wouldn't significantly harm the time allocated to language arts," said Mr. McCall.
