"Angelo would fit right in here. He could dance with Mrs. Marcos all eve- ning." Duvall, in the Philip- pines as guest of the Ma- nila International Film Festival and enjoying all the good things his status warrants, was regretting that he hadn't been able to bring Angelo Evans along. Angelo is a 13 -year-old Gypsy boy whom Duvall spied on a New York street and found so irresistably engaging that he made a movie about him, "Angelo, My Love." He not only made the movie, he fi- nanced it out of his own pocket to the tune of $1 million. The film will be released in April or May, Duvall said. "When I first saw An- gelo," he said, "he was 7 - years -old on a New York street talking to an older woman. "He said, 'Patricia, if you don't love me no more, I'm gonna move to Cincin- nati.' "He was like a little man, and I knew I had to make a picture about him." In order to do so proper- ly, Duvall spent three years hanging around Gyp- sies who, he believes, de- rive from India. Gypsies doii4't go to school as a rule, Duvall said, so Angelo can't read or write; though he won't invariably admit it. "One day," Duvall re- ported, "when we were dis- agreeing about something, he told me, 'Before I make my next film, I'm gonna read the script.' "I've told him if he's going to be a Hollywood actor, he's going to have to learn to read." In Duvall's latest film, "Tender Mercies," he plays an alcoholic country -singer with which the real coun- try singer George Jones claims was inspired by himself. "He says the film's based on his life," said Duvall, "but it's not." The movie, shown in competition at the New Delhi Film Festival, opened in New York March 4. Duvall is a picker and singer of sorts who for kicks has performed with a band at a Texas honky- tonk and who has been asked to play Merle Hag- gard in a proposed bio-pic. "But I don't want to play another country singer right now." Next I want to play the pope." He has in fact been ap- proached about playing a fictional pope and will probably do so if the project develops; even though, being a non-Catho- lic, he knows the role will demand deep research.
