The Canadian film in-
dustry is becoming more
exciting as each year
passes; proof of this is the
quality of the films
nominated and chosen as the
year's best at the annual
Genie Awards ceremony in
Toronto. Though many films
were unknown to Canadian
theatre audiences, the clips
shown whetted our appetites
and made us want to see
more. And one cannot
always say that about
Hollywood films.
"The Grey Fox" was
named the best picture and
claimed several other
awards, including best
supporting actress, Jackie
Burroughs, and best foreign
actor, Richard Farnsworth.
The best actor award went to
Donald Sutherland for his
performance in the tense
medical drama,
"Threshold". This
Canadian. who has worked in
international film, clutched
his Genie gratefully and
simply thanked Canada.
The best actress award
went to Rae Dawn Chong for
her performance in the in-
ternationally acclaimed
"Quest For Fire". R. H.
Thomson was best sup-
porting actor for his work in
"If You Could See What I
Hear". Singer -composer
Burton Cummings won a
Genie for best original song,
"Save My Soul" from
"Melanie".
Like most award shows,
the ceremony dragged on too
long and the audience had to
suffer through long ac-
ceptance speeches and weak
emceeing. But this was of no
consequence, beside the
excitement of knowing that
Canada is quickly taking its
place beside the film capitals
of the world in producing
exceptional motion pictures.

For its recognition of
Canadian talent this season,
the Huron Country
Playhouse at Grand Bend
has earned a grant of $12,000
from the Canada Council.
The Canadian productions
will be performed on the
stage of the new theatre,
Playhouse II.
The season at the new
playhouse will open July 1
with "18 Wheels" by John
Gray. The rock musical by
James Saar, "The Return of
the Curse of the Mummy's
Revenge", will debut on July
8. And on July 22, "Eight to
the Bar", the musical -
comedy by Stephen Witkins,
joins the others. The three
plays will run alternately
until September 3.

Next Monday evening is
the big date for the
Hollywood film stars as the
Academy of Arts and
Sciences presents its Oscars
to the best movies and
performers of 1982. The
ceremony will be presented
live on CTV. "Gandhi" is
expected to take several
awards, including one to Ben
Kingsley who played the
Indian leader. Meryl Streep
is being touted as winner of
the best actress award for
her work in "Sophie's
Choice".
