The Wingham Advance-Times, 1983-04-06, Page 20Page 8—Crossroads—April 6, 1983 B's'ckga1T1m`. fl BY W rd Perhaps the best way to approach this problem is through the process of elimination. X has only four ways to play the 5, and we can immediately reject one of them, 6/1, as totally suicidal. Of the remaining three ways, 13/8 is probably the worst. In a mutual holding game such as this, where each side holds an ad- vanced anchor in the oppo- nent's home board control of the outfield is extremely important. Often, the winner is the player who eventually con- trols the outfield so effec- tively that he alone can safely move his men off his advanced anchor. Clearly then, X should not weaken his grip on the outfield by breaking the 13 -point. Playing 8/3 is plausible but unconstructive. Moving another man behind O's an- chor doesn't accomplish anything except stall for time. The best move with the 4 is 21/16. X threatens to free an excess back check- er and exert more control over the outfield. Unless it is hit, this checker also be- comes available for X to move during the next few turns. This allows X to temporarily maintain all blocking points by keeping his other checkers where they are. X has no fear of being hit because 0 would have to break the 15 -point to do so. This is O's most effective blocking point at the moment, and X would love to see it disappear. In ef- fect, X tempts 0 to make the foolish mistake of hit- ting the X blot. In general, it is often correct to move a blot in front of a key enemy block- ing point as long as the point is "stripped" "PPe (without any extra men). This is be- cause the opponent cannot both hit and keep the point. To complete his turn, X should play the 1 as 4/3. Since this man is already somewhat out of play, ad- vancing it does no harm and allows X to safely maintain all existing points. Points are numbered 1 to 24, starting with X's home board at the lower left. A move, for example, from the 7 -point to the 3 - point is written 7/3. 7/3* means that a man was hit on the 3 -Point. 7/3(2) means that two men were moved to the 3 -point. 34373!31301• istrienun 1 3 3 • • • 7110101192 •a►lgh1 Mark Twain wrote in Hartford mansion Lovers of "Tom Sawyer" and "Huckleberry Finn" can visit the Victorian mansion in Hartford, Conn., where author Mark Twain (Samuel L. Clemens) created the classic American boy he- roes. Although Twain is gener- ally associated with the Mis- sissippi River and the West, Missouri -born Twain had never seen a huckleberry until he moved to Hartford. His house was built in 1874 for the then princely sum of ;130.000. TERRY SPROUL CONSTRUCTION Asphalt Shingling Old or New Buildings In Business over 10 years.
