W h y keep income tax receipts? Keeping records for in- come tax purposes is not only a legal requirement, but may also save money for in- dividuals and corporations. Although income tax re- ceipts bring back memories of lengthy calculations and the time you spent complet- ing your tax return, keeping those receipts when tax fil- ing season is over can help you back up the deductions or expenses you.claimed. After tax filing season, the tax department carries out several programs whereby returns are doubled checked for accuracy. Returns from taxpayers whose income is from wages and salary may be subject to programs known as post -assessing or matching. Returns from tax- payers who are self-em- ployed or earn investment, rental or commission income ,may be scrutinized through audit programs in the de- partment's offices or on the taxpayer's premises. The post -assessing pro- gram is aimed at taking a closer look at a number of deductions claimed by tax- payers. For example, re- turns claiming deductions for eligible expenses, mov- ing expenses or child care expenses could be closely examined by the depart- ment's assessors. The matching program uses a manual or computer system to check receipts or information slips supplied by taxpayers. Amounts on in- formation slips, such as the T4, the TFA1 (family allow- ances) and the T4U (Unem- ployment Insurance),are. compared with figures en- tered by taxpayers on their returns in order to determine whether all income has been reported. Receipts for pay- ments are also matched to check whether taxpayers who received the payments reported them. Besides checking the in- formation reported by tax- payers, the matching pro- gram identifies taxpayers who did not file a return or may be guilty of tax evasion. In 1981-1982, taxes of more than $38 million were collect- ed through the post -assess- ing and matching programs. For taxpayers who income is from sources other than wages and salary, their re- turns may be viewed in de- tail in the department's offices. Known as an office examination, this type of audit will involve contact with the taxpayer by letter or telephone. The depart- ment may also conduct a field audit which takes place at the taxpayer's residence or place of business. In either case the taxpayer may be required to provide receipts or documents to support deductions or sub- stantiate expenses. Last year, $45 million in taxes were recovered through office audits and another $476 million recovered through field audit pro- grams. These audit programs not ,only lead to collection of un- paid taxes but also encour- age taxpayers to comply with the law. Anyone con- tacted by Revenue Canada, Taxation must supply all documents supporting the deductions claimed. If the required documents and re- ceipts are missing, the -de- ductions may be disallowed. Ryan's Fancy travels to Ireland Ryan's Fancy, comprised of Dermont O'Reilly, Denis Ryan and Fergus O'Byrne, has been called "the finest Irish singing group in North America".
