The Wingham Advance-Times, 1983-03-30, Page 26Page 6—Crossroads--March 30, 1983 BILL ONTARIO Henrik "Skipper" Fietje lives with his wife, Jantje, in a seniors' complex in Cam- bridge. They're a happy, busy couple in their late 70s. Their apartment isn't big by ordinary standards but for them, there's plenty of room. That's because "Skipper" was born and grewup on one of the 8,000 sailing vessels that used to ply the canals of Holland and the North Sea. Jantje's parents also sailed the canals. Whole families lived on the boats in very cramped quarters. Sons took over the sailing ships from their fathers. It was a way of life. Today, when you walk into the Fietje's place, you're surrounded by model sail- boats. "Skipper" sailed for many years. Now he sails in memories. He builds model ships like those he sailed. He uses no blueprints or draw- ings. Everything is carved out of his recollections. Currently, "Skipper" is working on a big schooner. So far, he estimates he's spent about 1,000 hours on it. He uses only a few simple tools. And,there's a replica of his family's ship and other models of similar craft. They're scattered around on shelves, on tables, and on the floor. What he's done, in a way, is build his own life story. When Holland's canal and coastal ships switched from sails to diesel motors in the early thirties, life on the waters changed. The canal boats disappeared. "Skipper" intended to keep on sailing anyway, but there was a complication. He wanted to marry Jantje, but she was frightened of sail- ing! Despite her family's background, she had re- mained a confirmed landlub- ber. She had a built-in fear of ships — especially walking across gangplanks. "I had to choose between the sea and marrying her," said "Skipper", looking over at his wife. "I chose her, and I'm glad I did," he added with a chuckle. The couple travel a lot. They showed us their com- fortable van out in the park- ing lot. And sometimes they fly. But go on ships? Not a chance. Ships still scare the bejeb- bers out of Jantje. Academy Award nominee Sunday Already the winner of seven national and interna- tional awards, Just Another Missing Kid is now in the running for an Oscar. First broadcast on The Fifth Estate in April of 1981, this 90 -minute documentary will be retelecast on Sunday, April 3 at 7:30 p.m. giving television viewers who missed the program's ori- ginal telecast a chance to see it before the Academy Award presentation on April 11. Just Another Missing Kid recounts an Ottawa family's desperate search for their missing son. It is a docu- mentary which exposes the glaring inefficiences and failures of the American judicial system. On July 10, 1978, 19 -year- old Eric left his home near Ottawa for a five-day drive to Boulder, Colorado. Four days later, he called home, saying he'd had trouble with his van. He promised to call the following day at five o'clock. His family never heard from him again. When Eric first went miss- ing, his family turned to law enforcement agencies in both Canada and the U.S. for help. Everywhere, the re- sponse was the same. "Well, maybe he ran away." "If you don't hear from him in 30 days, get back to us." During the next two months, the Wil - sons tried unsuccessfully to find Eric themselves. Fin- ally, they hired their own one-man police force, a pri- vate detective by the name of Jim Conway. Conway, an ex -cop who had worked the toughest beat in New York City, spent the next eight weeks in a painstaking and frustrating search for evi- dence. it was through his work that the Wilson family discovered what really hap- pened to their son.
