DRAMA ABOUT RAPE
AND ITS AFTERMATH
A Matter of Choice, a
powerful CBC Television
drama about rape and its
emotional and psychological
aftermath, will be telecast
on CBC Television on Sun-
day, April 3 at 9 p.m. as part
of the 1983 season of CBC's
For The Record series. First
telecast in 1978, also as part
of the For The Record series,
A Matter of Choice stars
Roberta Maxwell as Carol, a
young woman who is raped
by a close friend, David,
played by Gary Reineke.
Also in the cast are Fiona
Reid as Carol's understand-
ing roommate and Neil
Dainard as Martin, a sym-
pathetic and no-nonsense
lawyer who tries to prepare
Carol for the legal complica-
tions and emotional torment
in store for her if the rape is
reported to the police.
A Matter of Choice was one
of the first of a number of
films to come out dealing
directly with the subject of
rape. Producer Anne Frank
says, "Because of films like
A Matter of Choice and the
continuing work' of groups
like The Toronto Rape Crisis
Centre and many women's
organizations, there has
been some progress in the
fast few years in opening up
the subject of sexual vio-
lence to ,ards women.
