On the eve of the last epi- sode of M.A.S.H. which is a monument to how good tele- vision can be, it's interesting to speculate on what is down the road. I saw a promo the other night for a new show, hosted by attorney F. Lee Bailey. It seems a guest who has some real important reasons not to tell the truth (the one I saw featured the man who claimed Howard Hughes be- queathed him a fortune) , but swears he is not lying, is given a lie detector test. A great part of the pro - grain is watching a needle zig back and forth on a poly- graph test. You could die from the excitement. What do I know? Maybe an electronic series starring a Jaycees ask nominations for Outstanding Young Farmer Skip Maher, Elmira Jay- cees, has announced that entry forms are now avail- able for the 1983 Outstanding Young Farmers' Awards Program. Entry forms may be had by contacting (519) 669-5054 or (519) 669-1400. Deadline for entries in the local competition is March 21. Winners will be announced in this newspaper on March 30. This program is designed to bring about a better un- derstanding of the problems and achievements of the farmers in our area. "Agriculture is Canada's oldest and biggest industry," Skip Maher said. "And as a consequence of the ability and efficiency of the men en- gaged in this industry, ours is the best -fed, best -clothed nation in the world. It is our hope that the OYF program will result in a better under- standing and appreciation of the role the farmer plays in our daily lives." The young farmer selected must be between the ages of 18 and 39 inclusive, and not turn 40 before January 1, 1984. He must derive at least two-thirds of his income from farming and does not have to be a Jaycee member. He will be selected locally, and judged in a regional competition, on his progress since entering agriculture, his soil and water .conserva- tion practices and his contri- butions to his community, Ontario and the nation. This is the fourth year the Canada Jaycees, a leader- ship training organization, in conjunction with the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, has conducted a national OYF program and the first year the Elmira and District Jaycees have participated. The program is sponsored nationally by the Bank of Montreal. The local competition winner will be entered in the regional OYF contest and, if he wins there, will represent Great Lakes Region (South- western Ontario) at the Na- tional Outstanding Young Farmer Banquet in Calgary, Alberta on October 27-29, 1983.
