Healing". But that is what happened when the Grammy Awards celebrated 25 years and honored the best of 1982 at a painfully long ceremony in California. Gaye was named best . rhythm and blues performer for that little number. His female coun- terpart was Jennifer Holliday for "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going". Top pop awards were won by Melissa Manchester for her performance of "You Should Hear How She Talks About You"; Lionel Ritchie for "Truly" and Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes, named best group for their recor- ding of "Up Where We Belong". The sound track from "Chariots of Fire" was judged best pop in- strumental . The record of the year, an award shared by performer and producer was "Rosanna" by Toto, a group also named producer of the year. The song of the year, a Grammy given to the composer, was "Always On My Mind". That composition was also named best country song and won a Grammy for its singer, Willie Nelson, as country male singer of the year. The best country performance by a female was "Break It To Me Gen- tly" by Juice Newton and Alabama's "Mountain Music" was best per- formance by a country duo or group. Best rock performers were Pat llenatar and John Cougar and jazz awards went to Sarah Vaughan, Mel Torme, Manhattan Transfer and instrumentalist Miles Davis. Men at Work, a new group from Australia, was named best new artist and classical awards went to soloist Leontyne Price and Canada's great pianist. the late Glenn Gould. He was also named to th'e Grammy Hall of Fame, as were the late Hank Williams and the late"Glenn Miller. Guitarist Les Paul won a special Grammy for his special arrangements and per- formances of instrrimental music, much of it played by Les and his wife, Mary Ford. With the use of electronics and new recording techniques, he created a new polished sound that paved the way for other musicians. A Grammy Award is their way of saying thank you.
