The Wingham Advance-Times, 1983-03-09, Page 24Page 8—Crossroads--March 9, 1983 By JEFF WARD Recently, I saw an inter- mediate -level player make a careless, but all -too -com- mon mistake in the di- agrammed position. X, the player in question, was visibly disgusted with the way the game had gone. Having taken an ear- lier double, X first missed a double shot and then a single shot while 0 was bearing off. X now faced the very strong possibility of losing a gammon and with it, four points. X rolled 5-4, an above average roll in this posi- tion, and quickly moved 15/6, bringing a man to the 6 -point in order to reduce the gammon danger. But X received a painful shock when 0 next rolled 4- 4. By instantly sweeping his remaining men off the board, 0 won a backgam- mon and pinned a six point loss on X! X's obvious mistake was not using at least part of the 5-4 to advance his rear man. Although X's actual play was slightly better in terms of preventing a gam- mon, it was much weaker overall because of the high risk of losing a backgam- mon. I prefer 19/14, 15/11 with the 5-4. This move elimi- nates the danger of a back- gammon while diversifying X's outfield checkers. Then if X is lucky enough to roll a 6 or a 5 on either or both dice next turn, he can use these num- bers efficiently to move to the 6 -point. The most important thing, however, is to move the back man out of O's home board. Whenever your opponent is down to four men or less during the bear -off, it is usually best to completely vacate his home board. Otherwise, your opponent's 6-6, and possibly other rolls as well, may win a back- gammon next turn. There are a few excep- tions in positions in which your opponent is likely to leave a two -blot double shot next turn. Then, it is sometimes better to leave one man back and try to bit. Usually, however, elimi- nating the backgammon threat has precedence ovgr all other considerations. Probably the best advice is just not to get careless when things go badly. There is usually some way you . cam make the bad sit- uation worse. Points are numbered 1 to 24, starting with X's home board at the lower left. A move, for example, from the 7 -point to the 3 - point is written 7/3. 7/3• means that a man was bit on the 3 -point. 7/3(2) means that two men were moved to the 3 -point.
