Has Your Pet Had
A Health Examination
Lately?
A periodic examination is
as important for a pet to re-
ceivp as it is for humans. It
will help determine the
general health of your pet
and also assure your pct has
proper immunization. It
usually costs less to prevent
a problem than to treat a
condition that has been de-
veloping for some time.
Checkups are an important
part of good preventative
medicine.
In getting a physical
examination a pet will have
its temperature, pulse and
respiration rate taken.
Weight and general appear-
ance should be carefully
scrutinized. You will likely
be asked about your pet's
diet, water intake, and what
you have observed in your
pet's daily behaviour.
Many people look to a pet's
nose as an indicator of the
animal's health. The veter-
inarian is more likely to look
elsewhere. It is important to
look at and smell the skin
and haircoat. A dry, lustre-
less coat or an unusual odor
are often health problem
signals.
Eyes are important
barometers of health. Older
animals, for example, are
checked for cataracts and
cloudy lenses ( nuclear
sclerosis)
The veterinarian will use
an instrument called an oto-
scope to look at parasites, ul-
cers, infections or foreign
matter in pets' ears.
The nose is examined for
discharges or other irregu-
larities. Dogs and cats have
tonsils and these are exa-
mined along with the glands
and other, structures in and
near the throat.
Other areas of importance
and interest in the health
examination are the pet's
mouth and teeth, legs and
spine, muscle tone and
general conformation of the
skeleton. A hand or "palpa-
tion" exam by your veter-
inarian of the abdominal
area will help in the assess-
ment of this part of the body.
Listening to the heart and
lungs with a stethoscope is
used to evaluate the chest.
A number of other tests in-
volving the use of X-rays or
radiographs, electrocardio-
grams (ECG) and sophisti-
cated blood tests are becom-
ing more common in com-
pleting the health examina-
tion particularly in an older
pet. A single small blood
sample can reveal a multi-
tude of health indicators.
The periodic health exam
is also a good time to review
your pet's immunization.
record and to ask. any
questions pertaining to your
pet's health.
Pets, like people, benefit
from a planned program of
health care and should enjoy
a longer, happier and
healthier life because of the
concern and time the owner
takes in providing such a
program for their pet.
Citizens
alert
Global Television will be
premiering a new series
called Citizens Alert begin-
ning on Friday, March 11 at
9:30 p.m. Styled along a past
series produced by Global,
CODE 1078, Citizens Alert
will focus on unsolved police
investigations of disapper-
ances and murders. Back-
ground to each case will be
presented, along with a
dramatization of the facts as
they are known
The series will also have
access to all the police equip-
ment and personnel required
to re-create the investigation
as it was carried out at the
time of the incident. Cana-
dian talent will be used to
present the victims and per-
petrators during the
dramatizations.
Host Patrick Conlon will
be presenting the case of the
mysterious disappearance of
Lee Marie Di Palma from
Barrie on Sept. 21, 1982 as the
first episode. In this case, a
wife and mother, Mrs. Di
Palma disappeared without
a trace. Her car was located
at the Bayfield Mall with no
signs of a struggle having
taken place. Assisting Citi-
zens Alert with the case are
the Barrie Police, the Mid-
land OPP and the Orillia
OPP.
