By Louisa Rush
We all read last year of the
raising to the sainthood of
Mother Marguerite Bour-
geoy by Pope John Paul II,
but not much publicity was
given to a wall hanging
which was made by a Mme
Francine Lariviere-Robi-
chaud of Montreal.
Mme Robichaud had been
asked by the Sisters of the
Congregation of Notre Dame
to execute this piece of work
to mark the occasion, and it
was presented to' the Pope
after the ceremony.
As there was no known
portrait of Marguerite Bour-
geoy made during her life-
time, this entailed consider-
able research through
records in order to have
authentic garments shown
on the wall -hanging, the fin-
ished size of which was 175
em x 114 cm or 65" x 45".
The background to the
centre figure was cleverly
organized with shapes in
subdued colors which do not
detract from the central
figure. The illusion one gets
is of stained glass. Two
children, one of Indian and
the other of the white immi-
grants complete the picture.
It was Mother Marguerite
Bourgeoy who is credited
with the first schools in what
was then known as New
France, and from her be-
liefs, teachings and follow-
ers, there is a religious order
of thousands of teaching sis-
ters around the globe.
Her schools up and down
the St. Lawrence River were
free, and in fact members of
her order could only make
money by sewing at night. It
is on record that when
Mother Bourgeoy set out to
build the church of Notre
Dame de Bonsecours in Old
Montreal, a project which
was opposed by the church
authorities, she paid the
masons by bartering her
sewing for their labors.
I have covered this story
more fully in the latest issue
of my magazine, and there is
also a full page in color of the
wall -hanging presented to
the Pope.

Several readers have en-
quired whether I have in-
structions for . a man's
sleeveless vest pattern. It
seems they are becoming
quite popular for wear with a
suit for extra warmth, and I
know they are extremely
popular on the West Coast.
Leaflet No. 6713 has two
styles covering chest sizes
3844; one is in a basket-
weave stitch, while the
second is in cables. While a
sleeveless button -up vest for
both ladies and men, is on
Leaflet No. 0273.
