Health club plans
are still. uncertain
Plans for a health club and
fitnesscentre in the town of
Wingham are still hi the
rough stages, although some
• plans seem to be taking
shape,according to Dr. Lee
Cowley , and Dr. Allan Over-
gaard .from the • Wingham
'Chiropractic Centre.
The chiropractors initiated
the idea, but are :hoping to
form a committee of in-
terested members of the
community to help them get"
it off the ground.
People who have some sort
of expertise in the field or
those who are just en-
thusiastic about the proposal
are welcome to become .part
of the committee, Dr.
Cowley said.'
The survey which they
sent'out last month indicated
public interest in a health
club and fitness centre. Out
of 1,000 surveys, the
chiropractors said they
received 77 positive replies
and three negative. .
A 10 per Cent reply rate in
a survey of this nature is
considered very good,
commented Dr. Cowley, and
he added he was pleased
-with the response.
Wintario . grants of up to
one-third of the cost of
equipment are available, but
they have not applied for any
grant money as yet, although,
• they have been looking
through the equipment cata-
logues.
"The grant is a major
factor;',' said Dr. Cowley,
adding that if• no grant
money is available, the
project probably• would not
go ahead.
The health club and fitness
centre will include a weight
room and a sauna and
whirlpool.
Many people indicated on
their surveys that they
wanted an indoor pool and
squash courts, but the cost of
such features make those
expectations totally un-
realistic, said •Dr. ,Over-
gaard.
The chiropractors are
looking at the Zehrs• plaza as
a possible site for the centre
because of its parking space
and its location.
. But, "We , haven't signed
on the dotted line for
anything at all," Dr.
Overgaard said.

leads to Royal defeat
Southampton jumped into
a commanding first -period
lead and went on to defeat
the Wingham Royals 8-5 in
Intermediate C hockey at the
Wingham. arena Friday
night.
The Southampton Sabres
struck early when Al Blair
fed a pass to Steve Smith in
the slot at 2:03, and that
quick, shorthanded goal
seemed to deflate the
Royals. The Sabres carried
the play as the Royals ap-
peared disorganized and
lacking intensity and desire,
and three straight goals by
Southampton's Bruce
Weatherhead put the Royals
in a big hole,
Then a powerplay goal by
Blair at 15:23 and Weather -
head's fourth goal of the
period a minute later sent
the Sabres into a 6-0 lead as
more than one Royal fan
expressed bewilderment •at
the team's lacklustre play.
At 17:31 the Royals finally
got on the score sheet as
Dennis•Knox kept the puck in
at the point and hardworking
Dave Golley blasted a shot
home from close range. The
•period ended with the Royals
on the wrong end •of a 6-1
score.
The second period saw the
Royals settle down and play
a better period of hockey
than the disastrous first. The
Royals pressed but without
success, and the only goal of
the period was a powerplay
goal by Brock Turcotte at
11:05. Southampton ap-
peared to have the game well
in hand with a 7-1 lead after
two periods.
With lightning speed, the
-twosome twosome of
Blair and' Bill Buckton took
only 22 seconds of the third
period to up the score to 8-1.
At this point the Royals
finally shifted into high gear
and, with strong skating and
close checking, carried the
play.
At 1:43 Ken Marchildon
dug the puck from the corner
and set up Ron Bennett for
the Royals' second goal, and
58 seconds later the same
twosome combined on the
power play, this time with
Marchildon the marksman,
to make it 8-3.
Wingham continued to
exert pressure and at 18:18
Randy Clarke dented the
twine from close range with
Bruce Blake and ' Dave
Stephenson assisting.
The final goal of the game
came at. 19:45 with the
Royals playing shorthanded.
Dennis Knox picked up a
loose puck at centre ice and
steamed full throttle into the
Southampton zone to fire a
scorcher into the, net.
WHISTLE STOPS—
Without a doubt the Royals
were not up for this game as
they were for their game last
week against Mildmay.
Their lacklustre play in the
first period was the cause for
their defeat. The team
certainly missed the ser-
vices of that pair of spark
plugs, Murray Black and Ed
Haines.
For the Southampton
Sabres, Bruce Weatherhead
had a four -goal game and
veteran Al Blair played a
strong game with two goals
and two assists.
