Wingham Advance-Times, 1981-12-02, Page 12Paj4,e 12 ,The Wingham Advance -Times, December 2, 1981 ' resident Leonard Houghton, passes at London Robert Leonard Houghton of 439 Saul St., London, formerly of Wingham and Teeswater, passed away at his home on Wednesday, November 25, following' a brief illness. He was 58 years of age. Mr. Houghton was born at Cromarty, Perth County,, on J nuary 23, 1913, a sot ±, the fate Mr. and Mrs.,l tam .Houghton. He was'formerly employed by United Farmers' Co -Operative, Wingham, and later owned and operated a restaurant business in the village of TeesWater. He is survived by his wife, the former Helen Phelan of Wingham; two sons, Leonard of Wingham and Peter of Windsor; eight grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Jack (Gladys) Kemp of Mitchell; and two brothers, Ross of Seaforth and Gor- don, London. He was predeceased by one son, Frank (Fled) Houghton (Base Borden). The -late Mr. Houghton rested at The Currie -Walker Funeral Hdrne, Wingham, where complete funeral and committal service was con- ducted Saturday at two o'clock by Rev: Paul L. Mills' of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Interment followed in Wingham Cemetery. • Mrs. Kay Murray passes suddenly at her residence Family and friends were shocked last week to learn of the, sudden passing of Mrs. Kate (Kay) Murray at her home, Frances Street, Wingham, on Monday, November 23. She was in her 78th year. Mrs. Murray was the former Kate Thompson, a ' daughter of the late James and Esther Thompson. She. was born in Culross Town- ship on December 2; 1903, Her Husband, William Cross Murray, predeceased her on March 1, 1968. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Merle and Mary, and one brother, Duncan. Service held for M. Trench Funeral services were held in •Listowel at • 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. l l for Morley M. Trench.• • Mr. Trench died Nov. 29 at Hanover . and District Hospital. He was 74 years of age. Born. March 7, 1907. at Teeswater, he was the son of Robert and Wilhelmina (nee Paisley) Trench. . ... On Sept.' 30; 1939 at Hamilton, he and Elizabeth Hughes were married. Before moving to Listowel. several years ago„ the couple resided in -Oakville. Mr. Trench was retired from the casket manufacturing business. He was a member of Trinity United Church in Listowel and was a member of Full Gospel Business- men's Fellowship. Besides his wife, Mr. Trench is survived by a sister, Mrs. Helen Buck and by a brother, R. Douglas Trench, as well as by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and by a sister. Rev. John Anderson of Trinity. United Church conducted the funeral ser- vice. whichwas held at the 'Robert Trench Funeral Home in Listowel. interment is in Teeswater Cemetery. The pallbearers were Brad Hughes, .Ron Smyth, Evan Smyth, George Gr•asby, Fraser McNeil and Harold Sriglev. DIED STAI'FFER—Passed away Wednesday. Greenock Township Mrs. Murray was+ member of the Wingham United Church and was ac- tive in many town organiza- tions. She was a member of the Wingham Lawn Bowling Club,. Ladies' Afternoon Bridge Club, a member of the Hospital Auxiliary which she served as treasurer for three years and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of which she was a Past Wor- thy Matron. She also served as a volunteer . at . the Wingham Cancer Clinic, Before her retirement about ten years ago, she had been emplgyed for 'about ten years as an office recep- tionist at The Wingham Advan e -Times. Left to mourn her passing are two sons, Ronald of Toronto and Douglas, Lon- don; and six grandchildren. The late Mrs. K Murray rested at The Currie -Walker Funeral Home; Wingham, where. funeral service was conducted Friday at 1:30 by Rev. Cecil Jardine. A letter to the Globe from the min- ister of energy evoked re- sponse by way of letter from both Opposition Leader Stuart Smith and House Leader Robert Nixon. The energy minister charged that his position had been misrepresented, and indicated that he had no in tention of hurting -the com- petitive position of Suncor, or of disclosing information that would jeopardize 'at- tempts to find a buyer or buyers for a further 26 per cent of ' the ,company's shares. In fact, there has been no request for disclosure of in- formation that is normally seen as sensitive and secret data. A call has again been made to have financial ad- visers from the government and from McLeod, Young, Weir and Price Waterhouse attend and review the trans- action with Legislative members. ONTARIO AGRICULTURE The task force report pre- pared by a group of five Fed- eration of Agriculture ap- pointees, including Murray Gaunt from Wingham, was presented to the annual meeting • of the federation this week. The report demonstrated that Ontario agriculture is operating at a disadvantage' when financial assistance which Ontario farmers re- ceive is compared to as- sistance from other prov- inces. Several recommendations were made in the report, and we are awaiting government -response to the report. To this point, requests for aid to .farmers have been met with. a request for proof of need. The report certainly meets that request and goes further to suggest ways to alleviate the problem. The children have been working since October to make their costumes, reported Anne Campbell, workshop director arisen again. This time a Grimsby man who thought he was investing $30,000 is in danger off losing his home. • The $30,000 which the man thought was going to Astra was channelled to Re -Mor, and when he went to with- draw the money he was told •he could not. Instead, Astra loaned bim-$27,000, for which the' company is now suing him. The government has been asked to look into this matter.
