hail, all ,past week to speak
with co tcerned • Citizens
about the proposed six alter,
nate routes for tranSmi3sion
lines.
The information centre in
Clinton, one of several On-
tario.Hydro is having across •
Southwestern Ontario, was
the first opportunity "Ser the'
public to learn about t
routes first-hand. Ontario
Hydro is seeking a response
from the public, and the in-
formation centres are one of
several methods.
There are five working
groups throughout South-
wester n Ontario which are
made up of organizations, in-
cluding representatives of
the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture, the Association
of Major Power Consumers,
the Ontario. Historical
Society, and various repre-
sentatives from municipali-
ties. Of the five working
groups, four are still
meeting. The Listowel
group, involving the counties
off Huron, Perth, Wellington,
and Waterloo, has been post-
poned until November.
Besides these two methods
of involving the public, On-
tario and newspaper adver-
tising.
Most visitors to the in-
formation centre wanted to
learn more about the pro-
posed routes, what Ontario
Hydro terms "conceptual
planning".
"Conceptual planning",
according to Steve Rimmer
of the Environmental
Planning Department of On-
tario is "the highest level of
transmission planning". The
proposed routes, shown on
literature available at the in=
formation' centres, are the
board areas where the trans-
mission lines may go.
As. of June 1 of this year,
Ontario Hydro started public
involvement in' the choosing
of a route: In November,
Hydro hopes to submit an
environmental assessment
document to -the provincial
government, recomtiriending
a,preferired system plan, ie.
the route most agree401e to
-all.
Once < government ap-
proval is obtained, under the
Environmental Assessment
Act, 1975, Hydro will start
further detailed studies
which will involvethe public.
These studies will select
actual routes and sites for
the required transmission
facilities. This will then be
brought to the government
for approval. Ontario Hydro
has projected the facilities
will be 'in service by July,
•
1988.
Of the six proposed routes,
four run through Huron
County, from Bruce Nuclear
Power • Development at
'Douglas Point to London.
There. were 38• people at-
- tending the information
centre° in Clinton, which On-
tario Hydro considers a
"pretty' good turnout". The
questions asked by those in
attendance related to
Hydro's compensation
policy, the need for the
' transmission lines, the
impact on the environment
and alternative energy
sources,
Bob Peck of Varna said he
realizes people have tl) have
power and while he hopes the
transmission lines won't go
on his land, he will have to
put up with the lines if they
do. •
"i'm here to learn more,"
said Mr. Peck.
Both „,Mr. Peck and Don
Lobb of Clinton said they had
learned from `the' informa-
tion centre and they intend to
remain interested as the pro-
ject continues. Mr. Peck said
he could decide which pro-
posed route is best when he
had gathered .more informa-
tion.
Mr. and Mrs. John Moffat
of RR 1, Brucefield said they
were naturally concerned
about the proposed routes
and wanted to know what the
alternatives are.
Besides the meeting • in
Clinton,` Ontario Hydra held
