"With small children the
best technique I• find is to
play with them. They love to
play."
Parents who do not en-
courage a child to express
himself can compound the
problem, she added-.

What is a speech-language
pathologist and what does
she do? It is not easy to
explain in a few iirOrds, but
'basically her .job it helping
people to talk:better.
The two partof the name,
she explained; identify two
distinct aspects of her
profession.
•
Speech is the mechanical. •saves the child problems
process by which we talk; later: "A language problem
how well We can control it early in life, unless
governs the way we sound.
Language, on- the other
hand, refers to the structure
of sentences, the way we use
w-or4s and the why,. we mix
our words and sounds.
Problems in either area
can make communication
difficult, and speech-
language pathologists are
trained to help correct. these
problems.
The problems can have
many sources, and her
patients run the gamut from
the very young to the„very
old, Mrs. Riedlinger-Ryan
said. A child who is nearing
Kindergarten ageand still
has not started to talk, or
,puts sentences together.'
improperly, might' be
referred to her for help.
' This saves the teachers a •
lot of headaches later when
the child starts school and
corrected • can cause a
learning disability ae a later
age," she explained.
Another patient might be a
stroke victim suffering from
aphasia — damage to One of
the. language centres of the
brain — or partial paralysis
of the face muscles.
Aphasia . can cause
"telegraphic speech",
resulting in a person saying
"Cow in barn" instead of
"The cow is in the barn" or'
"Want go" for "I want to
go", whilefacial paralysis
• can make articulation dif-
ficult, resulting in slurred
speech.
• Yet another patient might
be one who has suffered
physical &Plage to the vocal
cords through an accident or
operation, and so must learn
