The Wingham BP fastball
team split a double-header
with the Owen Sound
McArthur Juniors Sunday at
the Wingham ballpark in the
season openerfor' both
teams.
The BPs showed, . some
promising hitting,. but
defensive lapses cost them in
• the first game: They lost 8-6
despite outhitting the Owen
Sound squad' 9-6; four
Wingham errors contributed
to the outcome.
The team came . back to
win the second game 6,-3
behind the five -hit pitching
of veterans Ed Daer. This
game was called because of
rains with two out in the top of
the final inning.
Defensive errors hurt. the
13Ps in the first game and
they quickly found them=
zein,trailing by three runs
aa 'the -Juniors jumped on
their mistakes. ,
Wingham 'came back to tie
the score 3-3 at the end of the
second inning, but fell behind
5-3 in the third. The Juniors
continued to chalk up runs at
every opportunity and a late-
game rally by the BPs fell
short.-
Doug
hort.Doug Petteplace was the
losing pitcher. He worked 223
innings before being relieved
by Don Edgar, who went the
remaining distance. Pette-
place struck out four but
issued three walks and gave
up five runs. Three of the
four Wingham errors also
came while he was on the
mound.
R. McLean . went the
distance on the mound for
Owen Sound, scattering nine
hits, one a solo home run
over the -right field fent by
BP catcher Wayne T6dd.

the WOAA regular season by

Gallaher added to the score
in the seventh With a home
run while the Royals had two
runners on base.

by the Royals was a
highlight with one double

first. The winning pitcher
was Ron Riley who went the
distance allowing only seven
hits.
The Royals next home
game is June 4' at 9 p.m.

Last week at the centre,
the seniors enjoyed a film
entitled "The Land of the
Loon". It was filmed in
Algonquin Park and showed
an excellent overview of
birds and other fowl that
dominate our northland.
Another foot clinic was
held atthe centre last Wed-
nesday. The Huron County
Health Unit has decided to
. hold the clinic in one location
rather than going to the
homes of those who wish to
take advantage of the ser-
vice. The next clinic will be
held Wednesday, July 15 at
1:30 p.m.
The regular afternoon
program goes on as usual
when the clinics are being
held, as the ',,technicians
occupy only a small area.
• The seniors have been
working on the June tray
favors.for the hospital. Since
Father's Day falls in June,
one of the volunteers gave, a
unique . suggestion for
making "hats". Styrofoam
cups can be melted in an
oven • to form the shape.
Every . other month the
seniors do the t1•ay favorsfor
the hospital auxiliary.
This summer the seniors
hope to take a group to the
Blyth Summer Festival. It is
an excellent opportunity to
see one of the plays being
offered since Blyth is so
close to the centre.
The seniors have been
trying for some time to get
the film "I Heard the Owl
Call My Name". It will be
shown this week. For anyone
interested in joining the
group for this film, it will be
showing Thursday, May 28,
at 1 p.m., as well as Tuesday
and Wednesday.
The annual meeting of the
Wingham and Area Day
Centre for the Homebound
will be held Tuesnay, c+iaddlG
16, at 1:30 p.m. in the
Armouries. All interested
people are invited to attend.
Community interest and
support are necessary for
the success of a program like
this.
Since Wingham is a 'small
centre, the town and area
are very fortunate to have a
seniors day centre such as
the Day Centre for the
Homebound.
A representative from the
Ministry of Community and
Social Services will speak on
the subject "What Are Day
Centres?". If there are any
questions about the centre,
plan to attend this meeting.
