Anyone who is "less than
enthusiastic about amateur
dramatics and choir music
would have been pleasantly
surprised by the variety pre-
sented at last Thursday's
annual spring production at '
,the F' F. Madill Secondary
School
The students presented an
agreeably intermixed pro-
gram of song and drama.
The result was.' entertain-
ment which never became
tedious. , -
The plays provided a
balance between -drama and
comic relief.

are a good indicator of just -
how entertaining a program
really is. Most youngsters
were attentive to the action .
onstage and during the choir
numbers...•
The only disap >i itiiijeie--
ment of the evening was the
poor turn -out. The gym-
nasium was filled to only half
of its capacity. Perhaps this
was due to poor advertising
or perhaps most people
would rather 'view a lavishly
done musical such "Fiddler
on the Roof" or "Oklahoma"
which. the students have
staged in previous years.
Larry O'Malley, president
of the student council, acted .
as master of ceremonies for
the program. He introduced..
the 70 -voice Madill Choir
which performed . four
musical numbers: "Verdant
Meadows" by Handel;
"Jesu, Word of God Incar-
nate" by Mozart; ."Har-
mony" by Simon & Kaplan;
and. the theme from Expo
67. "Man and His World", by
Hughers.
The drama club presented
a play by Michael Dines
entitled "Enter a Queen".
The scene took place during
a rehearsal for a play .con-
cerning the death :of
Catherine Howard, fifth wife.
of Henry VIII.
"Enter a Queen" featured
Lois Hanna, Rick Martin,
case 1Vebster, Debbie Sjaar-
"ila and Lynn Hilverda. The
play started slowly but rose
to a'.chilling climax in which
the ghost of the original
Catherine Howardappears
onstage.
The choir.performed three
more songs after the play:
"Un Canadien Errant", a
French Canadian folksong;
"Moon -River" by Henry
Mancini; .and, "Can You
Read My .Mind?", the love
theme from Superman. •
Following . the ' musical
selections, the drama club
returnedwith two short
comedies. The first, ..
"Present -Day Courtship".by
Roland Bottomley, was set in
1931 and featured Alice Van -
d rKlippe and Paul Craig in •
the title roles.
The second play, also
called "Present -Day Court-
ship" was set in 1981 and
paralleled the , preceding
play in that courting habits
were examined in -a humor-
ous light. Lizann Morrison
and Kevin Walmsley starred
in the second "Present -Day
Courtship" and • they also .
collaborated - with Mrs.
Audrey Tiffin to •wri'te the
script.' .
• To conclude the' evening,,
the choir performed several ,.
• selections from . Leonard
Bernstein's "West ' Side
Story". Among the numbers'
performed were: - "Maria",
"Tonight" : and "I'm So
Pretty".
Along. with the selections
from -"West Side Story",
Lisa Armstrong, Christine
Bregmah, Kim Craig, Kim
Hilverda, Liz Kaufman and
Janice, Judy and Karen
McMichael performed a
dance routine choreograph-
ed by Janice McMichael.
'After a curtain call
Producer -Lois Hanna
presented gifts to several
"special people": who had
worked hard to make ,the
production a success.,
Bernice Pas,schier,
director of "Enter a Queen",
and Jay Siddall, director of
