Instructors
learn CPR
John Gibson of Wroxeter
and Shirley Hanula, Wing -
ham, two local instructors of
St. John's Ambulance First
Aid, completed a course in
cardiopulmonary resuscita-
tion held in Clifford last
weekend.
They plan to take an in-
structors' course as soon as
it's offered so they can teach
CPR in Wingham and
surrounding communities.
The weekend course was
conducted by Harry
Haveman, an ambulance
driver at Palmerston.
The course was sponsored
by the Clifford Fire Depart-
ment and held at the curling
club.
youngsters learned all about
the night sky, which was
projected on the inner walls
of the dome.
Barb Dennett, a repre-
sentative from the museum,
described the planets, stars,
constellations and other
celestial phenomena as, the
youngsters gasped at the
effect of the dome. 'It was
like a rocketship trip to outer
space. •
Once inside' the students
sat quietly as Mrs. Dennett.
.explained how to find the
North Star, the - patterns ,of
constellations, such as Orion
the Hunter, and the big and
little dippers, the positions of
astrolo signs and the
fes es of the planets.
( afore the program, Mrs.
De" nett explained the
planetarium is being used as
a teaching tool in schools' in
London and surrounding dis-
trict.
The presentation is
designed to teach students
how to identify celestial
bodies and to urge
youngsters 'to learn more
about the universe. •
To date the students have
been impressed by the pro-
gram. The museum repre-
sentative explained that one
reason for their enthusiasm
is probably connected with
all of the recent attention to
and news coverage about
space travel.
The inflated classroom
looks large and cumbersome
to handle, but` Mrs. Dennett
said it only , takes five
minutes to set up and can be
deflated to fit into a sports
equipment bag, Once un-
folded, the material is con-
nected to a fan and blown up
to resemble a grey dome.
The planetarium, manu-
factured by an American
company named Sky Lab,
was available at the, museum
for the general public last
.year, but is now being used
in schools for full-day pro-
grams.
