S Society
TORONTO The Multiple
Sclerosis Soci4,. of Canada
and Gulf Canada, Limited
have in -flounced .that the
_company will donate 16 new
cars to the society in
recognition of the Inter-
national: Year of- Disabled
Persons, which is being
mounted world-wide In 1981.
Gerald Seguin, president
of the society, said the
donation, • valued at more
than $125,000, is a generous
and practical gift which is
badly needed. •,
He said the cars will be
distributed to society
divisions across Canada • to
provide more mobility for
people with MS and increase
the ability if the society to.
serve MS patients andtheir
families.
The cars will make the
society's work easier, he
added. "We estimate that
our staff ,members travel
nearly half a million kilo-
metres yearly to serve the
society and our clients. We
have always been short of
adequate transportation and
the cars will help us solve a
long-standing problem. We
congratulate Gulf and we
thank them.”
R. K. Harris, vice
president of Gulf Canada and
chairman of the comPny's
donations committee, said
the contribution is above
gulf's normal rate of giving
to any one cause, "but
reflects our recognition of
the forthcoming Year of
Disabled Persons and of our
corporate responsibility. We
hope it encourages other
companies to do something
special for the disabled in
1981.'
According to Mr. Seguin,.
although multiple sclerosis
is the most common
neurological disease of
young adults aged 20 to 40 in
Canada, and though Canada
is one of 'the hardest-hit
areas in the world, it has not
always been easy to tell the
society's story to a public
whose attention is focused on
more immediately frighten'ing diseases or on diseases
which strike children.
He said that in supporting
the Multiple Sclerosis
Society of Canada and the
35,000 MS victims it serves
Gulf . is recognizing the
terrible price all Canadians..
pay when young men and
women in their • most
productive years are struck
down.
It has been estimated the
Canadian economy loses
more than a quarter of a
billion dollars a year directly
and indirectly becalmed the
disease.
The society gives more
money per capita for
research into MS than any
other organization in the
world; it expects* to fund
more than $2 million in
research across Canada in
1981.
Its , current research
program includes in-
vestigations in immunology,
immunogenetics, virology
and allied fields. At present
research ibto multiple
sclerosis, which causes
deterioration of the
protective coating of the
central nervous system and,
can result in blindness, loss'
of motor coordination and
balance, indicates the
disease may result from a
`sleeping' virus which it
present in childhood and,
when reactivated years
later, attacks the myelin, the
fatty tissue surrounding the
central nervous system.
