An organizational meet- ing, held Monday night at Vanastra Recreation Centre, for a Huron County multiple sclerosis unit resulted in a unanimous vote by the 35 people ill attendance in favor of establishing a unit. Group rnembers, many of whom suffer from the disease, agreed that services provided by such an organi- • zation are needed in Huron County and subsequently • many volunteered for executive positions. The executive for the organization is: chairman, Debbie Rathburn of Wing-. • .ham; vice chairman, Bill Crump, Wingham; se- cretary -treasurers, Shirley Luna, Auburn, and Karen Harman, Bayfield; patient services, Jane Murdock and Regina Campbell, both of R. Roselle Spero, Ontario division field representative for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, suggested the unit should be organized to - satisfy three needs: patient services, admini- stration and public relations or education. • She said that each chapter, which can be established once a unit is 'organized, is basically for patients and theirfaniiliee. The three goals of the. Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada are: research into the causes and cures of MS, patient services and educating the public about the disease. Thesegoals are being met through the 42 chapters in Ontario. Mary Crober, patient ser- vices coordinator, said sufferers from the disease must learn • to accept it, adapt to it and find a place in the community. MS, which strikes during the most productive years of one's life, between 20 and 40, runs on an unpredictable course, causing physical and mental stress for its victims and their families. But with' assistance and communi- cation that a unit provides, "you can feel like a con- tributing person again and know that your're not alone." Grants available for on-farm stills • Farmers interested in experimenting with ethanol stills to produce grain alcohol for use as a fuel may now apply for provincial grants of up to $20,000. Lorne Henderson, minister off agriculture and food, announced the incentive program this week. "The purpose of this pilot program is to evaluate the technology and economics of ethanol production," he explained. Approved projects are eligible for grants of 40 per cent • of the capital cost, in - eluding paid labor, to a maximum of $15,000 for an on-farm still constructed by an individual farmer, or up to $20,000 for a still installed by a group of farmers on a cooperative basis. Applications should in- clude a description of the process proposed as well as use of the ethanol and its byproducts. The program will be ad- ministered by the ministry's energy management re- source centre, which is now being established. General information and information on how to apply are available at local ministry offices. ' Will moving to a "better" climate cure arthritis? The answer according to The Arthritis Society is no. Police to auction unclaimed bicycles Anyone who has had a • bicycle Asappear,..•-- aad who wants it back —• should pay a visit to the Wingham police station within the next two weeks. Otherkvise, the next time , yoU see it might be on the auction block. Wingham police plan to hold an auction Oct. 10 to clear out the collection of recovered but unclaimed bicycles which has been growing in the old cells under the town hall. More than two dozen bicycles. of all descriptions, ranging from a 'chopper" reinforced with angle iron to nearly -new 10 -speeds, currently occupy the old lock-up; and some have been there for years. Sgt. Doug Foxton said he remembers one of the bicycles having been there when he joined tlieforce back in 1964. • Police find the bicycles abandoned "all over the place", Sgt. Foxton repor- ted: atthe ball parks, along the streets or on the high- way. Some people come down to look for their missing bicycles, but not too. many, THESE AND OTHER BICYCLES will auetioned off this fall by the Wingham Police Department. And these who do •comp seldom. find • their bicycles in the collection: Police have' concluded that many of the ones they have must have been stolen else- where and abandoned here. They cooperate with neigh - „boring police departments in trying to find the owners, but without much success. One problem is that few people know their bike's seriai ntunber, he noted, and even fewer bother to mark the bicycles for iden- tification. As a result it is virtually impossible for police to trace an owner. Pace are alloWed to - auction unclaimed property • after a month, Chief Robert Wittig reported. However this will be the first such auction in recent years for this department. Sgt. Foxton said bicycle thefts in %Ingham average about a dozen a year, though this year has been very good SQ far. Part of the problem is that "kids leave -them lying all over the lawn for people to take,” he noted. He added that police receive reports on missing bikes which later are found about a block away. For instance someone will grab a bike from in front of the cinema, ride it down to Belle's Variety and dump it in the alleyway. „ • .. now is ygur chance, Tok , evening off to attend Western Air , • SerViCeS "AvintiOn round School," ...-', ,. .
