Despite
Despite the soggy weather
the annual Belmore Maple
Syrup Festival was a big suc-
cess again this year. Over
3,300 visitors showed up at the
Belmore Community Centre
for the two-day event: Organi-
zers estimated about 1,244.
seniors participated . in
Seniors' Day, last Thursday,
and another 2,109 people came
out on Saturday.
This year the festival
featured the sugar shanty,
located beside the arena, live
entertainment including the
step -dancing McMichael
Sisters from Wroxeter, Bruce
County Folk Singers, a ukulele
group from Howick Central
School, square dancers, Tom
Darling and his fiddle, and log

were set
upin
the arena •
in-
cluding for the first time, live
goats, lambs, rabbits and
chicks, together with the usual
craft and baking goods and
maple syrup products.
Walking into the arena on
Saturday one encountered a
mass -- "of people from all age
groups. Youngsters and adults
alike took time out to enjoy the
entertainment while clutching
onto colorful ' balloons .and,
munching on chocolate fudge
or pieces of maple sugar.
About, one quarter of the.
floor' space was roped off and
filled with tables for these
ordering the day's 'special,
pancakes and sausages. On
Saturday about 1,900. were

Meal on Thursday.
But even with the crowd,.
volunteers didn't seem to have
tool much' trouble keeping up
the, pace: Each cook was
designated:his or her own grill
and passed down plates of
heraernade pancakes on con-
veyer bats,: to be picked up by
hungry customers, Added to
these were handfuls of faeshly
cooked sausages and some of
that,goed ttld maplesyrup.
With .all'those .big appetites
food',really added up.
Organizers estimated that
aboit `2x000 pounds of
sausages, 1,000 pounds of
flour, 170 dozen eggs, _60,75
gallons; ofmaple syrup and
close td 300 pies were needed
to satisfy _ patronLs.
Barry. P (ulvey, past chair-
man of the arena work com-
mittee, explained that all the.
cooking, organizing, cleaning
up and demonstrating were
made possible through
cooperation and hard work of
volunteers from the Belmore
area. And because the.
displays and craftsmen are
from the area, most of the
money from the festival,
which has been going for 12
years, .stays in Belmore to .
help support the community
arena.

During the' event special
draws were made which saw
Mrs. Herbert. Beitz of Wing-
ham winning a quilt, Brian
