Programs reviewed at
MVCA general meeting
Representatives from 26
member municipalities of the
Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority met in Wroxeter Dec.
11 to review the authority's 1978
programs and to approve the 1979
preliminary budget.
Water management projects
again formed the largest part of
the program. Repair work on the
Bluevale dam, expansion of a
floodwarning system and
completion of a Lake Huron
waterfront study were some of
the projects outlined. A remedial
measures study was undertaken
to determine methods of flood
damage reduction in the village
of Lucknow and detailed design
engineering plans are underway
for the ListOwel conduit.
It was reported -that ap-
proximately 40,000 trees -were
planted on private land through
this year's conservation services
program. Requests from local
landowners who wish to reforest
marginal lands have prompted
another increase in the number
of trees to be planted in 1979• :
An experimental "erosion
control 'demonstration was
conipletedpt the site of the In-
s ternationEd PlovOing Viateh 'in an
effort to'Proriikiti di Maitland
authority's new erosion control
assistance program. Authority
members were informed that
landowners are to be encouraged
to contact the MVCA office for
technical advice and financial
assistai*e with small inland
erosion problems.
Conservation area develop-
ment completed in 1978 included
an enlargement of the pond and
swimming area at the Galbraith
property near Listowel,
devlopment of a maple syrup
demonstration at the Maple Keys
Sugar Bush between Molesworth
and Ethel and campground and
roadway improvements at the
Falls Reserve near Benmiller.
General maintenance was also
carried out at the Gorrie,
Harriston-Minto, Brussels and
Pioneer Conservation areas.
Information programs were
expanded in 1978 and will un-
dergo further improvements in
1979. The authority again offered
active conservation education
programs'.for youth groups and
civic organizations and within
the local school system.
In new business authority
members passed motions to
undertake a multi-year ground
water study and to proceed with
reconstruction of the Gorrie dam
in 1979.

Jenkins reported on the trip to
the Royal Winter Fair last month
and Mrs. Carl Johnston gave a
report of the area convention she
attended at Kitchener. The Inr
stitute ordered the Consumer
magazine for another year.
The members were urged to
speak out against television
advertising, particularly that
which endorses feminine hygiene
products. They were asked to
write letters to the companies
which make the products and to
the station which shows the
advertisements.
Thank -you cards were read
from Mary Luanne Clare and
Tom burin. Each member signed
a petition urging that a rabies
clinic be held soon in the area.
Roll call was an answer to the
question, "What do you think
Christmas will be like in 100
years?". Some thought the real
meaning of Christmas would be
back, others thought it wouldn't
be even mentioned.
Lunch was served by the
hostess, Mrs. Carl Johnston, and
members of the lunch com-
mittee, Mrs. B. Peacock, Mrs.
Tom Dunn and Mrs. Spading
Johnston. The January meeting
will be held at the home of Mrs.
Mel Craig on January 10 at 2 p.m.
Roll call will be a tip on beating
the high cost of eating.

Boxing Day, the day after
Christmas, dates to 16th century
England. The name derives from
the giving of boxed food, gifts or
money all accompanied by a
card, to tradesmen and servants
in acknowledgment of their ser-
vice.

One of the first Christmas
cards printed in Canada was by
Rolph, Smith and Co., of Toronto,
whose cards were "entered
according to the Act of Parlia-
ment of Canada in the year 1881
— in the Office of the Minister of
Agric ultuie" .
