Businessman
for many
years, dies
William A. Kaufman, 75, of
Listowel died on Dec. 17 at his
residence.
Mr. Kaufman was born on
March 28, 1903 in Wallace Town-
ship to the late Mr. and Mrs. Wil-
liam Kaufman (Elizabeth Deeh-
ert).
He was married on Sept. 11,
1929 to the former Annie Nichol in
Elora Township. They resided on
the 8th concession of Wallace be-
fore moving to Listowel in 1937
where he operated the Interna-
tional Harvester Farm Imple-
ment Agency until 1951. He also
ran a foot appliance business in
Listowel for many years,
Mr. Kaufman was a member of
Trinity United Church where he
was an elder and he was also a
member of Listowel Masonic
Lodge 225.
Besides his wife, he is survived
by two sons, William G, Kaufman
of Listowel and Rowland Kauf-
man of Wingham; one daughter,
Mrs. Alan (Muriel) Pearce of
Burlington; and four grandchil-
dren.
Besides his parents, he was
predeceased by three brothers.
The funeral service was held at
1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 20 at
the Robert Trench Funeral
Home, Listowel with Rev. Wil-
liam Bell and Rev. J. D. Martin
officiating.
Interment . in Fairview
Cemetery.
A memorial service was held
by the Listowel Masonic, Lodge
225, at the funeral home'on Tues-
day evening at 7:30 p.m.
The pallbearers were John
Coghlin, Elmer Bean, Glen
Blackmore, George Nichol, Rae
Bender, and Lloyd Knoblauch.

Two house fires
during a week
The Wingham Fire Depart-
ment was at the scene of two -fires
in the seven day period ending
Tuesday noon.
Firemen answered the alarm
at 7:35 p.m. Saturday after . a
renovated Belgrave store oc-
cupied by Steven Penny and
owned by Jim Couletes caught
fire.
Wingham Fire Chief Dave
Crothers reported there was
about $2,000 damage done to the
contents of the building and about
$1,00_QAD the. building •itself.Most.
of the damage was caused by
heat: and smoke, ,he said, but
some was caused by water.
The presumed cause of the
blaze is curtains located too close
to an electric baseboard heater.
Firemen were called to the
home of Mrs. Harold Bridge on
Highway 4 south of Wingham on
Dec. 13 to deal with a chimney
fire. The alarm came in at 8:35
p.m.
No damage was reported as a
result of the blaze and no water
or chemical was used to ex-
tinguish the fire.
