. _ 'tri,
The Wingham Juvenile hockey
team recently completed a hectic
road trip during which it played
four games in five days,
emerging with a very com-
Ynendable record of three wins
against only one loss.
The road trip started Thursday
night with a game at Lion's Head
and the Wingham team came
away with a convincing 5-0 win.
Rick Deichert's outstanding
goaltending kept Lion's Head off
the board and the Wingham team
was in command for most of the
50 minutes, led by the hard
skating and forechecking of Bill
LeVan and Mark Passmore.
LeVan and Passmor-e each
picked up two goals in the game
and Paul Foxton netted the other
tally.
The whole team deserved
honorable mention in this game,
especially Laurie Haines, Steve
t.;
MacKay and Stan Stapleton, who
managed the defensive duties on
their own.
WINGHAM 4, KINCARDINE 1
After a late arrival home
Thursday the team headed for
Kincardine Friday night.
Deichert hadn't cooled down
from the Lion's Head outing and
everyone was looking for a
victory against the vigorous
Kincardine team.
Bruce Stainton scored the
opening goal for Wingham on a
pass from Mark Passmore in the
first period. Kincardine tied the
game in the second, but Paul
Foxton's unassisted goal put
Wingham in front 2-1 by the end
of the. period. Captain Laurie
Haines fired the third goal for
Wingham and Kevin Carter,
filling in for the injured Mike
Beattie at left wing, deflected
Stan Stapleton's booming drive

team went on a five minute
scoring spree and changed the
score to 5-2 in its favor.
Foxton netted his third goal for
the first hat trick of the season
and the team started to regroup
late in the period, but it was too
late to change the outcome of the
game.
WINGHAM 7, PORT ELGIN 4
After playing three games in
four nights Rick ,'Deichert was
glad to turn the goaltending
duties over to Steve Burke for the
final game of the road trip. Burke

Ironmen remain atop league with split of weekend games
The Wingham Ironmen
remained on top of the OHA
Central League after splitting a
two game weekend. The team
lost to Fergus 9-7 Friday night
but put it together again in a
physically bruising game here
Sunday, defeating Wiarton 8-2.
The Ironmen have a 10-1-2 record
for 22 points, which is the best in
their. league.
Fergus remains close behind
with a 9-3-1 record for 19 points
and second place. Markdale is
close behind with 17 points from a
record of 8-7-1, but has played
three more games.
The Ironmen also lead in the
goals for and, against categories,
having scored 109 times while
allowing only 45 over the 13
games played. Fergus has scored
90 goals and allowed 59.
Bernie Haines leads the
Ironmen team scoring race with
15 goals and 15 assists. Jim
McGee is second with 16 goals
and 13 assists.
BLAST DYNAMOS 8-2
Tom Graham scored two goals
and assisted on one other to lead
the Wingham Ironmen to their
10th victory of the season in a
game held here k Sunday af-
ternoon. The win, kept the
Ironmen three points ahead of
Fergus in their division race,
each team having played 13
games.
The game itself featured
several jarring body checks and
end to end action as both teams
struggled to break a first period
tie.
Wingham opened the scoring
the first period on a powerplay at
8:47 when Gord Kinahan fed
Kevin Carter a pass and. Carter
converted it for the score. At
14:11 Bev Davidson tied the score
when he fired a shot from the
blueline: Taylor may have been
partially screened as an Ironmen
defenceman tried to block the
shot. The rest of the period
remained scoreless with both
goaltenders coming up with some
key saves.
The Ironmen took control in the
second period as they scored five
goals while limiting the Dynamos
to one. Tom Graham scored at
1:06 when he kept the puck in the
Dynamo zone and, in attempting
a pass to Jim McGee, the puck

dropping_ 9 - 7 game to Fergus
Jim McGee and Bernie Haines
scored three goals apiece in a
game held in Fergus Friday
night, but it wasn't enough as the
Green Machine put an end to the
Ironmen unbeaten streak. The
team had gone 11 gameswithout
a defeat, running up a 9-0-2 win -
loss record.
McGee opened the scoring at
the 12:54 mark of the' first period
when he kept the puck in at the
Fergus blueline. He fired a 30 -
footer past Kevin Johnson after
kicking the puck ahead with his
skates while warding off a
defender. Bernie Haines con-
nected at 14:22 when he took a
pass from Rick MacLennan,
blasting it by Johnson.
Gerald Konte replied for
Fergus as he lifted the puck over
Steve DeJong. McGee then
scored his second of the night
when he skated in, warding off a
defenceman, and got away a low
shot that beat Johnson on the
short side. Thirty one seconds
later at 16:34 Haines scored his
second goal when Ed Haines fed
him a pass from the slot and
Bernie drilled it home for the
score. The period ended with the
Ironmen up 4-1 and in apparent
control of the game.
However in the second period
the Ironmen took penalties which
were very costly as Fergus
scored three times on the
powerplay. At 3:41 Steve Brock
slapped in the loose' puck
following a goal -mouth scramble
and then, with the Ironmen
playing two men short, Konte
scored two consecutive goals to.
tie the score at four apiece.
Paul Gear gave Fergus the
lead when he picked up a pass
inside the Ironmen blueline and
fired a wrist shot that went all the

at five when Ed Haines blasted a

two periods.
In the third period, withboth
teams playing five a side, McGee
finished off his hat trick when
Jim Blackwell stole the puck

McGee and he faked the goalie
out of position and tucked the
puck behind him. The Ironmen

At 13:09 Bernie Haines made it
4-1 while the Ironmen, were
playing a man short. The Iron -
amen completely dominated the
play during their two minute
penalty, allowing just one shot
from outside the blueline while
having numerous scoring
chances themselves. Kevin
Carter fed Haines, who blasted a
shot from just outside the right
faceoff circle, beating Hooey.
Chuck, . Jones replied for
Wiarton at 15:23 when he drilled
a shot from the point that went
through a maze of players and
beat Taylor,who was screened on
the play. At 17:49 Graham set up
Jim Blackwell with a centering
pass from the corner which
Blackwell converted for the
score. At 19:37 Ed Haines fed
1.andy Alton from the point and
Alton skated in, faked the goalie
to the ice and tucked in the puck
on the long side. The period
ended with the Ironmen up by a 6-
2 score.
In the third period Jay
MacLaurin connected at the 2:01
mark to give the Ironmen a five
goal spread. He converted a pass
from Mike Montgomery. Alton
rounded out the scoring at the
14:38 mark when he whacked in a
rebound off a shot by Rick
MacLennan.
The game had its share of
minor penalties but considering
the hard hitting thattook place in
the contest it remained relatively
clean. One fighting major was
handed out.
With a winning team like the
Ironmen and a team that works
hard to win the games it has, it's
hard to understand why fan
turnout has dropped over the past
few weeks. The team works hard
at the game and provides good
hockey entertainment. Fan
support is important to a team as
it provides motivation.
Future games will be: Friday,
Dec. 15, at Southampton and
Sunday, Dec.. 17, at Wingham
against Markdale.
Winner of the 50-50 draw this
week was Pam Gerrie, . who
received $31.50.
