Homes gears five paints
in 11-2 win forironmen
B.er.lie Haines scored three
goals and assisted on two others
to pace the Wingham Junior D
Ironmen Sunday to their ninth
victory in 11 starts. The win, an
11-2 victory over the Grand
Valley Harvesters, left the
Ironmen with a'tl,unbeaten record
of nine wins, no losses and two
ties.
The first period remained
scoreless until the 10:33. mark
when Bernie Haines received a
pass. from Jim Blackwell at the
Harvester blueline. He faked the
defenceman and moved to the
slot where he released a wrist
shot that beat goalie Clayton
Posson to his stick side.
At 14:27 the powerplay unit
connected when Haines set up
Jim McGee. McGee took the
pass, faked a shot and as the
defenceman went down to block
the shot, moved around him. He
closed in on goal and fired a wrist
shot high to Posson's glove side.
Clayton Callaway replied for
the Harvesters at 16:38 when the
Ironmen" defence gave up the
puck in its own zone. Harry
Weidner bounced the puck off the
backboards and on the rebound
the puck went straight to
Callaway, who put it away for the
score.
At 19:47 Jay MacLaurin scored
from Rick MacLennan, who fired
a shot from a sharp angle. The
rebound went to MacLaurin, who
tucked the puck in on \ the long
side. The period ended with the
Ironmen up 3-1.
It didn't take long for the
Ironmen to click in the second
period. With only 20 seconds gone
and the Ironmen playing a man
short, Haines had control of the
puck outside the Harvester
blueline. He made a sharp pivot,
throwing a Grand Valley
defenceman out of position. He
fed McGee, who returned the
puck to Haines. and Bernie fired a
quick wrist shot ' to put the
Ironmen up 4-1.
Dennis Knox scored at 7:52
when he picked up the puck at the
blueline. He moved in to the
corner, then cut toward the net
and fired . a backhander past
Posson. At 8:53 Ed Haines drilled
a shot from the point and Jim.
McGee converted the rebound for
the score. The IrOnmen :. were
enjoying a two-man advantage
y J
when Bernie' Haines connected •tp
finish off his hat trick. Bernie
received a pass from Tom
Graham and with a Harvester
defenceman holding on, he was
able to backhand the puck into
the net. The period ended with
the Ironmen up 7-1.
In the third period Gord
Kinahan scored at 4:55 on a
rebound from a shot by Kevin
Carter. Randy Alton scored on a
penalty shot at 7:55. He skated in
close and fired the puck up high.
to the goalie's glove side.
Tom Graham blasted a shot
from the blueline and Scott
Wheeler tucked in the rebound at
11:10. Jim Ritchiel then replied
for the Harvesters at 12:04 when
Callaway stole the puck from the
defence. There was a scramble to
the side of the net and when the
puck went out in front to Ritchiel,
he slammed it home.
Kinahan finished the scoring
with his second goal at 16:40. He
skated into the slot and fired a
backhander past Posson.
The three stars of the game
were: Bernie Haines with three
goals and two assists; Jim
McGee, with two goals and one
assist; and Tom Graham with
three assists.
In the 11 games the Irpnmen
have played to date, the
"Wingham club has scored 94
goals and has given up 34 to its
opposition.
Jack Tervit was winner of the
50-50 draw, receiving $23.50.
Shorthanded Royals lose
game
despite a laterally
The Wingham Royals staged a
late gamerally but came away
empty as the Fergus Flyers
downed them 8-5 in OHA In-
termediate C hockey action
Friday night at Fergus.
The Flyers took an early 2-0
lead on goals by Sandy Fleming
and Brian Shortreed. The Royals
narrowed the gap to 2-1 when Al
Dickson was awarded a penalty
shot and made no mistake.
However Fergus fired two more
markers from the sticks of Rob
Mason and Garnet Rooney, who
notched his first of four, to make
the score at the end of one period
Fergus 4, Wingham 1.
The second period belonged
entirely to the Flyers, in par-
ticular Garnet Rooney, as he
scored all three of theperiod's
goals to give the Flyers a com-
manding 7-1 lead.
The Royals began to stage their
comeback early in the third
period as Neil Bieman scored
from Bob Hillis and Murray
Black with only 40 seconds gone.
Twenty seconds later Dave
Golley scored unassisted to
narrow the gap to 7-3.
Fergus got that one back when
Rob Mason scored his second of
the night, but the Royals roared
right back with a goal by Tom
Black, assists going to Pete

Bakker and Golley. Late in the
period Dickson notched his
second of the evening from
Bieman, but it was too little, too
late, and Fergus held on for an 8-5
victory.
From the stands... Manpower
again was a major contributing
factor in this contest as the
Royals had only eight skaters
and a goaltender dressed for the
encounter. Several regulars were
unable to make the trip due to
adverse weather conditions while
others were suffering from
illness or nagging injuries.
This was probably the cleanest
game of the year as the Royals
had only two minor penalties and
Fergus had five.
The Royals remain winless on
the road and face another road
trip this weekend as they travel
to Harriston Friday night. The
next home game is scheduled for
Friday, Dec. ' 15, when Harriston
will pay a return visit to the
Wingham arena.
