Ingham Royals rally to 5-3 win over Mount Forest team The Wingham Royals fired four unanswered goals in the second period and went on to defeat Mount Forest 5-3 in an OHA Interniediate C interlocking game Friday night at the Wingham arena. Mount Forest's Tim Andrews PLAYER scored the only goal of the opening frame to give them a 1-0 lead. However it was a fired -up Royal squad that hit the ice to start the second period and they came away with no less than four goals. They outscored, the competition 5-0 Saturday and took Sunday's same by a '6-3 score: The SattirdaY shutout was the :first of the season for goaltender 'Robert .ScJiistad in the Wingham nets. Thinly Bron, Dwayne Jenkins, * Paul Robinson and ;,Steve Nicholson, with two, not- ched the goals. Sunday's contest was closer, t Wingham again emerged on #p. BretLCameion and Robbie Strong each got two goals in the me,.‘ with Mark Foxton and. Jimmy Dennis scoring singles. Dean Fernandes scored twice or Mississauga and Jeff Hunter • got the other goal. '• The boys were treated royally both on and off the ice, the team reports. Mississauga players presented them with souvenirs and everyone was sad to see it all end. Mississauga will be retur- ning the visit Jan. 27-28 for Wingham's Minor Hockey Weekend. STRONG SCORES SEVEN Robbie Strong scored seven goals to pace the Legion Pee Wees to a 12-2 victory over Clinton last week. Strong has now scored 24 goals in 12 games— quite a pace. Another highlight of the game was a picture passing play from Cameron to Jenkins and back to Caineron which resulted in a goal. Clinton opened the scoring in the first period and later led 2-1, but from then on it was all Wingham. Wingham scoring came from Strong, with seven, Nicholson, with two, and Stephenson, Cameron and Bray. Cameron had four assists while Nicholson, Foxton and Jenkins had two each and Dennis had one. Clinton scoring was by Cantelon and Dupee. Earlier in the week Wingham downed Seaforth by an 8-2. score. Strong got two goals in that game and singles were scored by Jenkins, Brown, Fokton, Cameron, Robinson and Bray. Forest goaltender Ralph Reeves from Russ Jones and Larry Robinson. Klos netted his second of the night at 10:53 from Jones and Rick Jacklin as the Royals took the lead for good. Less than two minutes later Jacklin made it 3-1 when he scored from Al Dickson and Tom Irwin. The Royals opened up a 4-1 lead before the end of the period on a goal by Pete Bakker from Robinson. Mount Forest narrowed the Broom and stone By Gerda Greenall Although it is unusual to be still golfing in late November, a foursome of Harry Garniss, Harry Elliott, Omar Haselgrove and Jack Sturdy could still be seen on the course last week. Golf • members are reminded to remove their clubs from the storage shed by the end of the month as the shed has been spld. Recently Frank Madill', a member of the board of direc- tors, and some helpers planted trees on the course. Club manager Muriel has all the golf supplies stored away, but curling supplies are on display. The Pro Shop is well stocked with curling equipment for Christmas shopping. Curling is now in its fourth week and Ice Chairman Al Williams reports the ice is in great shape. Monday saw the start of Farmers' 'Curling with 110 enthusiastic curlers. There are three draws on Monday and Thursday afternoons. On Tuesday afternoons 'the ladies take over the ice with two draws in play. Skips Joyce Hodgins, Ruth Orien and Ethel Gerrie all are tied with the same number of points. Hopefully this will change this week. There are no playoffs in the ladies' division before Christmas. The ladies are reminded there will be no regular curling on Tuesday, Dec. 12, as the Ladies' Provincial playoffs for our district will be held here. Our club has a team practising to take part in this event. Ap- parently a team of men gave it some stiff conipetition the other night! On Tuesday, Dec. 19, the ladies will have their last regular game of curling before Christ- mas. Monday evenings the men's division plays two draws, one at 7 and the other at 9 p.m. There is still room for a few more men.ekt press time a team skipped by Ted Elliott was on top. The Silver Broom competition for men will be held in Wingham Sunday, Dec. 17. Bridge results gap to 4-2 early in the final frame on a goal by Gary Williamson. Both teams played exciting, end- to-end hockey and at 15:32 Williamson brought Mount Forest to within one. They pressed hard for the equalizer, but with less than a minute and a half remaining Al Dickson of the Royals broke loose and scored unassisted to provide the necessary insurance and the Royals went on to preserve the 5- 3 victory. FROM THE- STANDSeeTtie- Royals continue to play superlatively on home ice. Their record stands at two wins, one loss and one tie at home while they remain winless on the road. This game ewes one of the most physical of the season as Mount Forest picked up 55 minutes in penalties and the Royals added 37. The next home game for the Royals is this Saturday night, Dec. 2, when they face the Goderich Sailors at 8:30. Brownie Corner By Jennifer Watcher Lisa. Ritchie received her collector's badge this week and, Debbie Hodgins got her writer's badge. Karen Clark and Tracy Thynne were presented with their golden bars and were given a grand howl for being the first girls in their group to get this badge. Mrs. Verna Steffler taught Group A first aid, while Group B learned the proper use of the stove and Group C continued to work on the friend to birds badge. The Tweenies made an invitation for their mothers to come to the enrolment. To finish a busy day Mrs. Sheila Richards came to teach some songs and singing games. . . Lillian Brooks and. Omar Haselgrove topped players at the bridge club last week. Elaine Colvin and Bernice Crawford teamed up for second place with Yvonne McPherson and Art Wilson in third. Margaret Cruickshank and May Porter finished in fourth place. Kinsmen founder receives awthd Hal Rogers, founder of the Association of Kinsmen Clubs, was made an officer of the Order of Canada during a ceremony at Government House in Ottawa last month. The award was presented by Governor General Jules Leger. This honor. was an unusual one as a person is normally admitted to the order as a member and only later moved up to the rank of officer or companion. The Association of Kinsmen Clubs, now the largest national service club in Canada, con- tributed more than $43.5 million in service work during its last fiscal year. 0--0--0 There are over 215,000 people in Ontario who hold valid St. John Ambulance First Aid cer- tificates. 1 ONE MORE GOAL—The Wingham Legion PeeWees haven't had much trouble with their competition se) far this season and their Nov. 23 match with Clinton was fairly typical. The score was 12-2 for Wingham. Tuesday at 7 p.m. sees a full ice of mixed curling in play. Bill Stephenson is presently leading. At nine o'clock a very new group of curlers from Blyth is also playing a full ice. We welcome them to our club. • The High School Curlers have the ice on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Dave Ablett reports the In- dustrial league seems to be having fun as well as some competitive curling on Wed- nesday evenings. Thursday night the Business Girls curl. Teams are drawn up each night so no one is obligated to curl each week. It is hoped more girls will come out after Christmas. Anyone wishing further information should contact Ruth Currie or Doris Walden. Friday night is the busiest of the week. Three complete draws are being played, beginning with the Early Birds at 6:45. Many are curling first and then enjoying their dinner in the dining room. Other draws start at 8:15 and the Night Hawks at 9:45. The draw committee consisting of Joyce and Art Carr and John Schenk is to be complimented on making upthe draws. Curlers are reminded to be, ready to step onto the ice at their designated times. Latecomers hold up everyone. Al and Mary Williams have brought along some sleigh bells to be used to signal the starting times and add an air of Christmas spirit. The standing, for the Friday night curlers has the Bill Hanula rink leading in the 6:45 draw, with skip Barry Reid leading the 8:15 draw and skip Nick O'Donohue in front at 9:45. The curling executive has looked over all the existing trophies. The old ones are to be repaired and used for corn - petition in the club. It is also hoped there will be some jitney curling and a few euchre parties in the new year. • Jack Goodall, chairman of the board of _directors, and his committee are making plans for a New Year's Eve dance. Ae.4.174177;!=',V;47;Tiie4i14V.PieieWeii[efeeeet • tub holds its first annual meeting The first annual meeting of the Winghain Golf and Curling Club Inc. was held at the club Saturday, Nov. 25, at 8:30 p.m., with a new slate of officers elected and trophy presentations to big winners of the golf season. The new club president is Dr. R. D. Wilkins. First vice- president is Betty Walker and Doug Neil was elected second vice-president. Joyce Church will be club secretary for the next year and Ross Hamilton will be in charge of membership. Bill Johnson will develop the golf program, while Mary Ann Cruickshank will be social convener. Nick O'Donohue will be in charge of the greens. Sheila Cameron will be ladies' captain of golf and Bill Skelding will be men's captain. This is the first year the golf club has a combined executive, as in other years there was a men's and a wcren's executive. Golf winners of the past season are as follows: Conron Rose Bowl, Mary Williams; McKinney Trophy, Betty Walker; McKinney Tray, Betty Walker; Carling Trophy, Betty Walker; Nine Hole Ringer — A class — Mary Ann Cruickshank; B class — Joyce Church; C class —. Bill Kerr; men's Wed- nesday Night, Lloyd Doors; and winners of the Interclub were Kincardine. Dick LeVan presented the financial report which showed a highly successful golf season. The construction of the expanded facilities has been carried out within thee guidelines approved by the membership, he reported. Jack Goodall, chairman of the board of directors, expressed appreciation of the membership to club manager Mrs. Muriel Grummett and presented her with flowers. • John Mann reported the curling membership has in- creased by 40 per cent over the 1977-78 season. The ice time is well-filled, he said. Three groups, YBC Bowling Scores BANTAMS The bowling teams are in a tight points race in the bantam league as Brian's Pineapples and Murray's Nectarines are now tied in first place with 28 points each. Steve's Squashes remain at 27 points and Marc's Bananas moved up to 26. Dwayne's Grapes have 23 points and Billy's Berries are lad with 18 points. " Kelly Hollenbeck bowled the girls' high single of 176 and the girls' high double of 274. Dwayne Scott and Graham Taylor both bowled 146 games, which were high for the boys. Graham Taylor had boys' high double with 285. Barracudas remained at 33 points, but slipped to second place. Jaws now have 26 points and are in third. Golden Carps have 20 points, Sandra's Sharks have 19 and Pirhanas have 17 points. JUNIORS AND SENIORS Greg Storey bowled a 293 game this week and a 756 triple, to make him the top bowler in the league. Kerry Thompson bowled the girls' high single of 194 and the 487 girls' high triple. Incredible Hulks are still well in front of other teams in the league and moved up four points this week, to 43. In second place with 36 points are Rocky's Raiders and Judy's Japs also have 36 points. Bad News Bowlers have 33 points, Donna's Dipsticks have 31 and Star Warriors have 29 points. Mary Williams and Lee Grove were appointed to the board of directors for three-year terms, replacing retiring directors Frank Madill and Mr. Mann. FORDWICH MIXED Earlan Osborn bowled the 258 high single for the men in this league. Nellie Allan had the ladies' high single of 251. Mr. Osborn also had the high triple at 677, while Mrs. Allan shared that honor with Ann Winkle. Both had 599 triples. Leon's Lions have 32 points and have a slim lead over Gene's Mean Machine „and Bob's Boozers. Each of those teams has 31 points. Kevin, Hickey bowled the high single of the week with a 297 game. Francis Merkley bowled the men's high triple of 715. Verna Haugh bowled the ladies' high single of 223 and the 621 ladies' high triple. 0-0-0 SENIOR LA1Jir.n. Team standings in this league show the Novas leading with 33 points while Cadillacs and Cougars race for second place with 29 and 28 points respec- tively.
