MALT -SIDE ORCHARD
On Friday, Oct. 7, and Tues-
day, Oct. 11, the Kindergarten
class of Mrs. Underwood, ac-
companied by six grade one stu-
dents went on a bus, driven by
Mrs. Grosz, to Mait-Side orchard.
On Tuesday, Mrs. • Parsons'
Kindergarten class and Mrs.
Underwood's second class again
went to Mait-Side.
The students had no fee to pay
for the adventure. They left
Howick Central at 12:45 and re-
turned at 3:00 p.m. The classes
could gather as many apples as
they could carry. There were
some who had their bags so full
they were dragging them along.
The apples were taken home to
their family to enjoy. Some ap-
ples were kept at school to make
applesauce for their hallowe'en
party. Mrs. Nixon, our secretary,
was given a few of these apples.
Mait-Side Orchard gave the
Kindergartens a jug of apple
juice for a treat. Also; they will be
making apple prints whjch will
make a tasty picture. The Mait-
Side proprietors gave the chil-
dren an excellent talk about the
different types of apples, the age
of the trees and how cider is
made.
Mrs. Underwood reported that
everyone enjoyed the excursion
and would like to go back to Malt -
Side Orchard again.

PHOTOS
On October 19 and 10 the stu-
dents of Howick Central had their
photos taken. Everyone seemed
to be pleased with their photos
last year. We hope they turn out
as well this year. We had indivi-
dual and group pictures taken. A
group photo of the Howick staff
was taken also. Most people had
made an effort to look their best
on this occasion. The photo-
graphers encouraged us to smile
so we would have a worthwhile
photo.

UKULELE BAND
Again this year Mr. Parsons
asked for an application from any
student in grades 6, 7 and 8 who,
wished to join the ukulele band.
For the past 5 years the ukulele
band has been performing at
such places as dances, concerts
and Senior Citizens' Homes.
Each pupil who joins this activity
will receive a ukulele along with
a consent form saying that if any-
thing happens to the instrument it
must be paid for by the student.
Also along with the ukuleles are
guitars, *With aad a piano.
Overall everyone thinks the
ukulele band is an interesting,
worthwhile program.

CANSAVE Xmas
cards cancelled
It is with extreme regret that
the Canadian Save the Children
Fund announces the cancellation
of its 1977 Christmas Card Pro-
gram due to a fire which broke
out in adjacent premises on Sept,
20, causing heavy smoke and
water damage to CANSAVE's
National Office at 70 Hayter
Street, Toronto.
The relocation of two CAN -
SAVE departments and the ex-
tremely heavy work load result-
ing from the damage makes it
impossible to implement this sea-
son's program effectively.
The regular CANSAVE Christ-
• mas Card Program will be re-
sumed in 1978 and they look for-
ward to receiving the loyal sup-
port of their many friends next
year.
