Hare it up
with Charlie
Tickets are still available for
the pork barbecue and barn
dance "Ham It up with Charlie"
featuring Charlie Farquharson at
the Seaforth Community Centre
this Saturday. Supper starts at
7:30 p.m. and includes barbe-
cued pork chops with all the trim-
mings. Charlie, Canada's fav-
orite country cousin, will deliver
an after-dinner address with his
rollicking views of "jog -free",
"History", politics and the arts.
Following dinner will be a
country barn dance featuring
Chris Black and the Swinging
Brass playing music with a coun-
try pop flavor as well as old-time
fiddling and square dnacing. Ron
Gethke, a well known local auc-
tioneer will take over the show
three times during the evening to
auction off an opportunity of a
lifetime — a dance with Charlie
Farquharson!
All proceeds from the evening's
festivities go to the Blyth Centre'
for the Arts to raise funds for
their 1977 summer season of
plays at Blyth Memorial Hall.
Mr. Farquharson, one of the stars
of television's "Hee-Haw" and a
famous Canadian author and
broadcaster, holds a special
place in the hearts of country and
city folk alike. He is a character
created by Don Harron, Cana-
dian actor, playwright, and
author of international repute
who has co-starred with such fa-
mous stage personalities as Sir
Alec Guinness, Katherine Hep-
burn, George C. Scott and Tyrone
Power.

Physical fitness parks
going up across Canada
A Participark .for Wingham'
It's not impossible, Though the
local Kinsmen Club rejected the
idea when first proposed; feeling
they had enough projects on the
go, President Rene Jones said he
will be reintroducing the subject
in the near future.
Participark is an idea being
promoted by Kinsmen Clubs
across Canada, with cooperation,
from the Sun Life Assurance
Company and PARTICIPaction.
It consists of a fitness trail with
11 activity stations spaced along
it. It can be adapted to any exist-
ing park. The concept originated
in Europe and the use of such
trails has become a way of life in
many Eurapean countries.
In Canada, Participarks are in
varying stages, of planning and
construction ,in almost, 200 'com-
munities from coast to coast. The
first one opened April 1 of this
year in PortPCoquitlam, B,C., and
it •is expected that within five
years there may be as many as
1,000 such parks in operation.
The primary objective of a
Participark is to help motivate
fairly inactive people to become
more physically active.
A Participark consists of a trail
for walking or ;jogging up to 21/2
kilometres (1 i/z miles) in length
through a park setting. Every 200
metres 'or so 'is • an exercise
station consisting of a sign on a
post describing the exercise to be
performed. Simple, inexpensive
equipment made of wooden posts,
poles or bars are located at each
of these stations to suit a specific
exercise.
A Participark combines self -
motivating exercise activities
with a pleasant, outdoor recrea-
tional experience. It provides an
opportunity for people of all ages
to increase their personal fitness
in an interesting and fun way.
It is a movement experience
rather than a true physical work-
out. Even those with a low fitness
level will find a Participark
appealing. At the same time each
station offers increasing chal-
lenge as the fitness level of the
user improves.
Lawn bowlers
invite members
A pot luck supper was enjoyed
by more than 20 members of the
Lawn Bowling Club Thursday
evening.
Many complimentary remarks
were made about the appearance
of the club house. The new siding
and the closed in porch are
visible changes from the outside
but one has to get inside to see the
carpeting and the panelling of the
interior. -
Some of the hardier members
went out to throw a few bowls
following the", supper; while the
majority enjoyed the warmth of
the club house and spent the'
evening playing cards.
We are still looking for new
members 'so don't be shy come
along and join us. It's still not too
late to put your name in for the
round robin.
Observe safety
.tips :when boating
Inexperience, 'overconfidence,
carelessness, disregard. for the
weather, lack of responsibility
and neglect in taking normal pre
cautions are the general factors
that cause the majority of drown-
ing fatalities from pleasure
boats,
The Ontario Safety League
reports that during the 1976 rec-
reational boating season there
were 98 drownings from pleasure
boats in the province. Almost 94
per cent of those drowned were
not wearing life jackets, 53 per
cent were under 30 years -of -age,
44 per cent were canoeists and 70
per cent of the drownings were
attributable to capsizing or
swamping.
Many novice boaters feel that
operating an outboard.motorboat
or a small cruiser is as easy as
driving a car. They overlook the
fact that pavement does not
make waves that can cause
tipping or swamping. Many
ignore the fact that courtesy on
our waterways is entirely dif-
ferent than courtesy on our road-
ways because more variables are
involved.
It is evident that too many •
canoeists are attempting to
venture out in situations for
which they have little experience.
Above any other type of pleasure
boat operator, a canoeist must be
thoroughly knowledgeable about
his sport, take greater pre-
cautions and be constantly aware
of changing weather conditions.
