BPs down Juniors 9-3 in
battle of hometown teams
By Peter Bauer
The Wingham BPs edged
the host Wingham Juniors by
a 9-3 count in a game played
before one of the best fast -
ball crowds of the season
Sunday afternoon at the
Josephine Street ball park.
The warm weeper and the
match -up between two local
clubs contributed to the good
turnout. ,
The game itself saw the
two clubs battle right down
to the ninth inning before a
six -run outburst by the BPs
blew open a tie game.
The Juniors had built up a
3-0 lead after three innings,
but the BPs chipped away
with a run in each of the
fourth, fifth and sixth in-
nings. The game remained
tied until the top of the ninth,
when the senior club cashed
in six runs on five hits for the
victory.
Kevin Coultes led off the
first inning for the Juniors
with a single, stole second
and went to thirdon a passed
ball before scoring on Troy
Pgcaluyko's RBI single.
The Juniors picked up two
more runs in the third in-
ning, scoring one with a
suicide squeeze.
The BPs got on the score-
board in the fourth inning
when Bob Armstrong tripled
and scored on' Ron Smith's
ground -out.
Two walks issued by Rick
Scrimgeour in the fifth in-
ning proved costly when,
with two out, Armstrong
came through with an RBI
single to make the score 3-2.
The BPs tied the score in
the sixth as Smith led off
with his second triple of the
game and scored on a
ground -out by Bob Pegg.
Neither team was able to
push another run across until
the ninth, when Scrimgeour,
who had started on' the
mound for the Juniors, gave
un a single and a walk,to the
first two batters. He was
relieved by Kent Cerson,
who moved to the mound
from his shortstop ,position
and so did not have the
benefit of a warm-up. Cerson
was promptly rattled for
four hits, driving across six
runs.
