Canadian performer
Sylvia Tysonwho has
become an international
singing star, will kick off the
music series that begins next
fall at the Blyth Centre for
the Arts. Sylvia and her
band, The Great Speckled
Bird, will perform Friday,
September 21, at 8 p.m. A
former Sarnia resident,
Sylvia had been quiet for
several years after splitting
with her husband and par-
tner Ian Tyson, but since her
big hit, "Nobody", she has
been kept busy with stage
performances and television
appearances.
Sylvia begins a new Blyth
series of Popular Music this
fall. It replaces last year's
Theatre Series. The featured
entertainer on Friday,
November 9, at 8 p.m. will be
Shirley Eikhard, a Canadian
singer and songwriter whose
style has often been com-
pared to that of Anne
Murray. The series ends on
Friday, March 29, with the
traditional music and
stepdancing of the group
Eritage.
For subscribers the
Popular Music Series costs
$22 for all three events if
purchased before June 15,
$24 after that date. Last
year's Theatre subscribers
have the privilege of
renewing their seat
allocations for the Popular
Music series before June 15.
Subscribers receive up to 50
per cent off the price of
single tickets, even more if
they act before June 15. They
also receive the best seats.
The Canadian Opera
Company Ensemble will
come to the Blyth Theatre on
Sunday, November 18, at 2
p.m. to perform the love
story, "La Boheme".
Classical pianist Douglas
Finch will appear on Sunday,
October 21, at 2 and local
resident Renee Stalenhoef
van Haarlem will be
featured Sunday, April 21, in
a recital of soprano, piano
and flute. This Classical
Music series costs $19 for all
three events before June 15,
$21 after that date.
In children's program-
ming at Blyth this year,
"Alligator Pie" returns for
one date only, Friday,
September 28, at 7:30 p.m. as
the start of a national tour.
Kicking off the Children's
Series will be Bill Russell
with string games, songs and
tales from Cajun country on
Saturday, October 13,' at 2
p.m. Nova Scotia's Mermaid
Theatre presents a puppet
show on Saturday,
November 17, at 2 and
Eritage plays songs and
dances of French Canada on
Saturday, March 30.
Storyteller Helen Car-
michael Porter entertains
children on Saturday, May 4.

four children's events are $9
before June 15 and $10 after
