Nutritional needs changing

"What we eat often has a direct
relationship to how we feel. As we mature.
proper eating becomes more of a chal-
lenge," says Monica Beaumont, a food and
nutrition specialist with the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture and Food's rural organiza-
tions and services branch.
Bone loss (osteoporosis), vitamin and
mineral deficiencies, overweight and under -
,weight and constipation are some of the
nutritional problems that plague the elderly.
-.With increasing age, calcium may be
withdrawn from the bones faster than it is
replaced, causing brittle, fragile bones. This
condition is known as osteoporosis.
Increasing calcium intake, restricting
protein intake to two to three moderate
servings and exercising daily will help to
keep the bones in good shape. Excellent
sources of calcium are milk and cheese.
The olderly tend to have iron, vitamin A
and C deficiencies. To obtain these
nutrients, unrefined whole grain cereals,
fresh fruits and vegetables should be eaten

check a41 our equipment. The equipment
required to measure out these micro ingred-
ients is very precise and we couldn't
understand what was going wrong."
"Just like the farmers' beans," said
Hopper, who spent seven years in Food and
Drugs with the federal government, "we
found the problem in one of the ingredients.
The dicalcium phosphate was showing a
variation of 1.2 points before it was included
in the premix. This could result in a 6.5%
variation in the finished product."
"We are now routinely checking all these
micro nutrients before they are included in a
premix with a new $85,000 piece of equip-
ment called a Plasma Spectrometer," said
Davis. "It is used in steel mills and other
metalurgy . industries to determine the
percentagle oi' the various metals present in
a sample, even when they, are there in
minute quantities. This machine is even
being used in hospitals on blood samples.
"A slight deviation in phosphorus levels
daily.
Being overweight is a problem for many
mature people. After age 50, the amount of
energy used decreases, and the needs for
calories is reduced; however, the require-
ments for essential nutrients remain the
same.
To lose weight, select foods from
Canada's Food Guide that are lower in
calories but high in nutrients. Being under-
weight can be just as serious as being over-
weight.
People who are underweight are more
susceptible to infection. Underweight people
are most likely not receiving all the essential
nutrients they need. To increase weight,
select foods high in calories and nutrients,
and eat several meals a day.
To alleviate constipation include whole
grain cereals, fresh fruits and vegetables in
your diet and drink a lot of water. A diet high
in fibre can eliminate the need for
over-the-counter medication.
may not be critical in some cases, but in case.
where the farmer is already on the low side, -
a shortage of even one or two percentage
points could lead to a number of health
problems."
Look For These Signs
There are a number of signs in a hog
operation which could indicate a feed formu-
lation problem. Some of the common ones
are pigs stalling at around the 180 lb'. level,
poor general growth and feed conversion,
poor indexes, below average litter sizes,
high mortality of young pigs, and breeding
problems.
"Some of these factors are affected by
inheritance," admits Davis, "but when pigs
are not performing as well in one herd as
similar pigs in another herd, you should start
checking every aspect of your feeding
-program.
"The same applies to other livestock
farmers too. If animals are not performing
well or are suffering from health problems,
one of the first things to check is the ration."
