John now lives in Port Rowan on Lake Erie, just a couple of miles away from the big homestead, the Saw mill, the grist -mill he used to operate, the creek, the forest and what's now called The Backus Conservation Area. Sometimes John is called upon to don a top hat and frock coat, and impersonate his great -great -great grand- father! randfather! That's for special events. The first John Backus was an enterprizing settler and conservationist. The Backus Woods, all 600 acres of it, is still the only forest of its kind in the province where you can see such a variety of trees. There are trees you may have never seen before like sassafras, cucumber, coffee walnut and Florida dogwood. Trees of great age and size and species that are found no where else in Ontario. But it's the Backus grist mill that historians drool over. Old John built it in 1798. That makes it Ontario's oldest mill, and the oldest mill in the country to be operated continuously by one family. • Ordinarly, John doesn't bother going to the mill during the winter. He's crowding 70 and has a lot of hobbies to take care of. But his boyhood friend, historian Harry Barratt, who lives in nearby Port Dover, per- suaded him to show me 9 4414N.%KKf4.1,b54.44:N..W44!!F,,Nf.4.4444.6 X+I.16.4FG04 04. +wolol/.(V.KAImax 4R1'/X?dllAiY4t9'Ai-0x .; +YOMM0Y.4400(NWKAtA 46GY04FAGi'ltR44WA++410 G`... John ran the grist -mill as a commercial venture until about 20 years ago when the family sold it to the Black Creek Conservation Author- ity. It's a picturesque place with hand -sewn beams, wooden pegs instead of nails and a restored water wheel. The mill wasn't operating when we were there because the creek was frozen over. But in the summertime it goes full tilt so people can see how things were done in the old days. Every schoolchild in the district knows about the mill's great moment in history. It happened during the war of 1812. The Ameri- cans burned all the mills along Lake Erie's shores. But the Backus mill was saved by a clever ruse. One of the family got the bright idea of setting fire to a big pile of straw a short dis- tance from the mill. From a distance it appeared to the enemy that the mill was on fire, and it wasn't until they had pulled out that they learned they'd been tricked. To the Americans that was the last straw! They never returned. By the way, the sign outside the old mill spells the family name as "Back - house". That was the original name, but old John's wife considered it indelicate. John didn't want to change it. She insisted, and finally he gave in and switched to Backus.
