The Mayans were a great Indian nation of Central America - Mexico, Guate- mala and Honduras. They built great temples and roads and were known for their vast knowledge and technology, ' Their ideas of beauty were somewhat different from ours, however. Cross eyes were co-tsidered a great marks of beauty and distinction among Mayan women. In fact, Mayan mothers were so anxious, to raise cross-eyed children, especially female children, that they tied small wax balls over their children's heads. The ball would swing back and forth before the. child's eyes so that invari- ably, both eyes would focus on the swinging ball. In due time, the child would indeed become cross-eyed, and beautiful. Starring Dennis Weaver, Britt Ekland, Patrick O'Neal and Jo Ann Pflug. For years, I've been threatening to walk the Bruce Trail. The whole 438 miles of it along the edge of the Niagara Escarpment from Queenston to Tober- mory, at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula on Georgian Bay. I like to imagine myself as one of those hardy hikers who stride along with a packsack, camp overnight, and who are up at daybreak ready to cover another 20 miles or so. I often get these vigorous, fit -as -a -fiddle spells while dawdling over my morning coffee in a comfortable hotel room. Preferably a woodsy place with open fireplaces and an efficient room serv- ice.. I hesitate to fulfill this dream of high adventure be- cause the rapid pace of the hikers I have seen doesn't seem to fit into my way of life. That's why I was so in- terested in meeting the Slow - Poke Hikers. They're a group in their Golden Years who live around the Golden Horseshoe area and have a different approach to hiking. I guess you could call it a non-aggressive approach. They mosey along. They stop to smell the daisies. They'll pause to admire a walking fern. They'll take time to fol- low a bee through the sun - dappled forest to his honey tree. They'll follow the soar- ing wheeling rhythm of a turkey vulture as it picks up air currents. There are about twenty Slow -Pokes and they talk a lot while they walk. It's mostly friendly banter. They clown around. They chuckle about the distance they've covered. When .1 saw them in action, it had taken' them seven years to cover just 120 miles of the Trail! The founder of the Slow - Pokes is Vic Franklin, a veteran hiker in his seven- ties who lives in the village of Burford. As he grew older, he got fed up With the do-or- die method on conquering the Bruce. So he advertised for hikers who wanted to loaf along the Trail with him.' The first to answer the ad was my friend Elsie Murphy, crusty columnist 'tor The Nanticoke Times, a weekly paper down Lake Erie way. Elsie started beating the drum and before long they hadan enthusiastic group of followers. Enthusiastic with certain reservations. Every spring they'd get out and do their bit on the Trail, asother clubs 'do, clearing away winter's , de- bris. They'd meet once a week. They still do. I met them one morning as their cars nosed in to Vic's backyard, and they scram- bled out. Admittedly, a sort of slow scramble. Their greetings were uproarious as if they hadn't seen each other for months. They welcomed me warmly, and off we went. Shuffling along. We didn't hike very far but as the con- versation drifted to walking the Bruce end to end I felt another spell coming on. A vibrant, healthy, fit feeling. I had a vision. All of us were arriving triumphant at Tobermory. I often think of the Slow - Pokes. Maybe someday I'll join them. Come to think of it, with my track record, I'd probably slow them down.
