Included are works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, Negro spirituals, the classic "Ave Verum" by Mozart, the beautiful "Simple Gifts", a jazz version of "The Creation". and works by contemporary composers Healey Wilton and Gordon Young. They will also ask the ---audience to join them in a hymnsing. • • Tickets for these concerts are available from the box office; 523-930U, the Blyth Saga, 523-4331, or any mem- ber of the choir. Audiences are invited to join the choir forrefreshrnents in the lower hall following. the perform- ances. 0 0 0 One of the finest musical - comedy stars , of the Broadway • stage, Ethel Merman, passed away in New York last week at the age of 75. From far and wide, composers, lyricists and performers crawled out of the woodwork to pay tribute to this terrific lady who could entertain audiences all over the world with her blaring voice and clear, concise lyrics. Ethel Merman began her Broadway career when. she performed a bit role in a Ginger Rogers play. She was given one song, "I've Got Rhythm", and it catapulted her to the top. She went on to star in the biggest musicals on the stage; then went to Hollywood. to make movies. But it is probably the Irving Berlin musical, "Annie Get Your Gun", that comes to mind first when one thinks of Ethel Merman. She blasted, out his nits, "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly" and "You Can't Get a Man With a Gun", with vim and vitality . and is the singer first coming to mind when "There's No Business Like Show Business" is played. Berlin once said of Merman that she could "make a bad song sound good and a good song sound great". Merman had been married. four times but all failed. She had one son -who was intent upon keeping her death and funeral arrangements priv- ate and dignified. Movies on Channel 13 THURSDAY MIDNIGHT -"ICE CASTLES". Stars Robby Benson, Lyn Holly Johnson. Starring Shirley Maclaine. A chic, wealthy New York divorcee, mother of two children, is swept up in a grisly series of events by the uncontrolled malevolence of her troubled brother.
