One of the finest musical -
comedy stars , of the
Broadway • stage, Ethel
Merman, passed away in
New York last week at the
age of 75. From far and wide,
composers, lyricists and
performers crawled out of
the woodwork to pay tribute
to this terrific lady who could
entertain audiences all over
the world with her blaring
voice and clear, concise
lyrics.
Ethel Merman began her
Broadway career when. she
performed a bit role in a
Ginger Rogers play. She was
given one song, "I've Got
Rhythm", and it catapulted
her to the top. She went on to
star in the biggest musicals
on the stage; then went to
Hollywood. to make movies.
But it is probably the Irving
Berlin musical, "Annie Get
Your Gun", that comes to
mind first when one thinks of
Ethel Merman. She blasted,
out his nits, "Doin' What
Comes Natur'lly" and "You
Can't Get a Man With a
Gun", with vim and vitality .
and is the singer first coming
to mind when "There's No
Business Like Show
Business" is played. Berlin
once said of Merman that
she could "make a bad song
sound good and a good song
sound great".
Merman had been married.
four times but all failed. She
had one son -who was intent
upon keeping her death and
funeral arrangements priv-
ate and dignified.

NAD have just

sound that will last
forever.
Is this a record?
Ll
NAD
Yes. And no.
It's not a record because there
are no grooves, it's less than 5
inches across, and' it's silver. It
doesn't wasp, hiss, crackle, or wear out like
ordinary LPs. Fingerprints and scratches
don't affect it. Just a wipe clean and it's
ready.
What you're looking at is the new compact
disc, and the new NAD 5200 Compact
Disc Player, which plugs into any stereo
system.
Instead of a stylus, it uses a laser to "read-
