Women's Missionary Society
discuss theme of remembrance
GORRIE--Mrs. David Neilson
hosted the Women's Missionary
Society of Knox Presbyterian
Church, Gorrie, when members
met earlier this month for a time of
fellowship while sharing desserts.
"Remembrance" was the theme
of the meeting which the president
opened with the poem "In Flanders
Fields". The Aim and Purpose was
repeated in unison and all joined to
sing "Dare To Be a Daniel".
Mrs. Glenn Underwood read
Paul's description of the battle
dress of the Christian, as recorded
in his letter to the Church at Ephe-
sus. She presented the history of
Remembrance Day which originat-
ed when the Armistice was signed
at the I 1 th hour of the l I th day in
1918 to end World War I.
The observance of this day was
confirmed in 1931 and in 1970, Re-
membrance Day was declared an
official holiday. While the majority
of veterans from World War I were
men, Mrs. Underwood observed,
she noted that the stellar perfor-
mance of women on the home front
was responsible for the franchise
being extended to women in Cana-
da. Mrs. Underwood concluded the
worship period evith prayer and "0
God, Our Help in Ages Past" was
sung.
The roll call was answered with
a thought on remembrance and six
visits were reported. Mrs. Alvin
Mundell and Mrs. Harvey Adams
made contributions to the birthday
box. A letter from Armagh, a home
for families in crisis, was read.
Mrs. Mundell spoke on the top-
ic, "Threatened by Resurrection".
After reviewing the story of the
women's visit to Christ's empty
tomb and their discovery of the res-
urrection, their reactions to this
momentous event were examined.
Using the background of the
WMS purpose, the future of the so-
ciety was considc,ed under the fol-
lowing topics: strengths, weakness-
es, opportunities and threats. Mrs.
Mundell concluded .the study by
reading an article entitled, "What is
the WMS?"
"Breathe On Me, Breath of God"
was the final hymn and Mrs. Neil-
son closed the meeting with a
prayer.
Mrs, Underwood hosts
ACG November meeting
GORRIE--St. Stephen's Anglican
Church Guild held its November
meeting at the home of Jean Under-
wood recently. She was assisted by
Barbara Bennett.
The president, Cherie Farrish,
opened with the Guild Prayer and
thanked Mrs. Underwood for host-
ing the meeting. Mrs. Farrish also
led the devotions.
The minutes were read by Grace
Browne and the treasurer's report
given by Georgina Zimmerman.
During the business, the election of
officers was conducted with the
following results: president, Mrs.
Farrish; first vice president, Greta
Bennett; treasurer, Mrs. Zimmer-
man and secretary, Mrs. Browne
A11 members of the executive were
re-elected.
A discussion on the church sup-
per of Nov. 19 was held. The guild
also agreed to cater to the Howick
Teachers' Christmas Party to be
held in the Wroxeter hall. It was
announced that the guild Christmas
party will, be held at the home of
Mrs. Bruce Kennedy of Fordwich.
A representative of the Chil-
dren's Aid Society had asked if the
guild would donate new clothing
for older girls. A box will be
placed in the church for these arti-
cles.
The president closed with all
saying grace. The mystery box was
brought by Mrs. Browne and was
won by Barbara Bennett. Lunch
was served by the hostess and en-
joyed by all.
