Junior Bruins edge Ironmen 5.4
After suffering three lopsided
defeats in their tour of midwestern
Ontario, the Boston junior Bruins
posted their lone win on Sunday,
by edging the Wingham Ironmen
5-4 in front of 130 paid fans at the
Lockridge Memorial.
The Bruins took a 3-1 first peri-
od lead and were in front 4-2 go-
ing into the final period. After tak-
ing a 5-2 lead midway through the
third period, the Ironmen scored
two in less then a minute to get. to •
within one.
The Ironmen pulled netminder
David Bartman in favor of an ex-
tra attacker in the final minute, but
were unable to net the equalizer.
The game started off rather une-
ventful, with neither team really
doing much hard physical ehl6k-
ing. However, about midway
through the opening period, the se-
rious checking started and players
on both sides were soon playing
hard physical contact hockey.
Boston opened the scoring at
9:12 of the first period as Ed Duf-
fy flipped the puck into open cor-
nerof the net after starting Wing -
ham netminder Steve
Schwartzentruber made a save at
the opposite corner of the net.
Just 19 seconds later, the Iron -
men ev'ened'the score as Brad An-
derson fired a shot through a maze
of players that found its way past
Boston goalie Matt Berg. Scott
MacDonald received the assist.
The junior Bruins regained the
lead at 15:20 when Dan Fontas
was sent into the clear, and he slid
the puck between Schwartzentru-
ber's pads.
Three minutes later, the Bruins
took a two -goal lead when they
caught Schwartzentruber napping
after playing the puck behind the
net with Wingham on the power
play. Boston defenceman Jeff Rus-
so claimed the puck at the Wing -
ham blueline and his shot was de-
fleeted up into the net by the
Wingham goaltender as he tried to
get back into the net.
Paul Dorsey gave the Bruins a
4-•1 lead at 12:18 of the second pe-
riod when he fired the puck over
Schwartzentruber's glove. David
Bartman took over in the Wing -
ham net at the next stoppage of
play•
Wingham got back to within
two at 16:12 when Jason Becker
scored from a scramble. ¶ric Sik-
kenga and Brent Robinson assist-
ed.
Matt Keating regained the
three -goal advantage for Boston
when he scored from close range
at 10:15 of the third period.
Brad Robinson reduced Bos-
ton's advantage to two when his
lob shot handcuffed Bruin t -
minder Berg at 10:57. Anderson
and Sikkenga received assists.
The Ironmen got back to within
one, at 11:50 when Anderson beat
Berg with a hard blast from the
point. Brad Robinson and Justin
Murray received assists.
Schwartzentruber and Bartman
combined for 38 saves in the
Wingham net, and Berg made 36
saves in the Boston goal.
The Ironmen took 10 of the 16
minor penalties assessed by refer-
ee Steve Gould.

Ironmen earn tie with Barons
The Wingham Ironmen earned
another point on the weekend in
Western Junior 'C' Hockey
League play as they skated to a 4-
4 draw with the Hanover Barons.
The Barons and Ironmen re-
mained tied for third spot in
league standings, with 15 points,
but the Barons had one game in
hand on the Ironmen.
Wingham was again plagued by
an ineffective power play as they
enjoyed two two-man advantage
situations during the contest, but
were unable to put the puck past
Hanover goaltender Greg Hellyer.
The Ironmen did get one power
play marker, but the goal came
with just two seconds left in the
manpower advantage situation.
While the power play was inef-
fective,, the Ironmen penalty kill-
ing was strong, limiting the pow-
erful Barons to just one power
play goal. It was effective at, the
start of the second period when the
Ironmen were shorthanded for
3:36 with Jonathan Lane sitting
out two minors received late in the
first period. In the third period, the
penalty killers 'did an excellent job
when the Ironmen were two -men
short for 55 seconds.
Ironmen Kyle Wheeler went
down in third minute of play when
he was checked' while trying for a
pass from Jason Thompson. He

with a charley horse.
After a scoreless first period,
Hanover opened the scoring at
8:05 of the middle stanza when
Chad Woollard deked Wingham
goalieDavid Bartman, after being
set up by Mike Traynor.
Scott MacDonald tied the score
at 11:41 as he broke in on a two-

with a low shot on the glove side.
The play resulted when former Ir-
onmen Deryk Hastie misplayed
the puck in the neutral zone and
ended up dumping the linesman.
Justin Murray and Eric Sikkenga
received assists.
The Ironmem,. took the lead at
17:51 when Sikkenga circled the
Hanover net after getting a pass
from Brent Robinson, and beat
Hellyer with a low shot on the
glove side.
At 5:18 of the third period, Ja-
son Howes pushed the puck across
the goailine. with his stick to even
the . score at 2-2. Just six seconds
later, Joel Lahn gave the Barons
the lead when his shot from just
inside the Wingham blueline
caught the inside of the post on
Bartman's glove side.
The Ironmen pulled even at
8:32 as Nic Goetz fired a loose
puck over a sprawled Hellyer as
the Ironmen were putting pressure
on the Hanover net. Sikkenga and
Thompson assisted.
Wingham regained the lead at
12:05 when Brett Sangster fired
the puck into the top corner, after
Hellyer misplayed the puck. Chris
Buchanan received the assist.
With 6:30 left in the game, the
Barons netted the tying marker
when Traynor shovelled the puck
under Bartman as the Ironmen
were sloppy defensively.
Bartman played a strong game
in goal for the Ironmen, making
29 saves, 15 in the third period
alone. Hellyer made 32 saves in
the Hanover goal.
The Ironmen took 14 of the 29
