This month's column deals entirely with the issue
of dropouts. It is one of the major problems facing
our secondary schools today because an estimated
33% of Canadian high school students drop out
each year. That means approximately 33 out of eve-
ry 100 students do not graduate, and that involves a
major loss of youth potential.
I hope the following questions and answers, relat-
ing to dropping out of high school, provide a degree
of insight and motivation for those adolescents
looking forward to a successful new school year.
Question #1
I try my best at school, but I always end up with
marks in the mid -60's. while my friends pull off A's
and B's. If I can't be successful, what's the use of re-
turning to school?
Answer #1
Success is measured by what a person is capable
of achieving and how much effort he/she puts into
getting there. Everyone can't be "A" students, how-
ever, we can get an "A" for effort (as in your case).
Instead of comparing your performance with others,
be content with setting personal goals you are capa-
ble of obtaining.
Life does not assure success, but it does provide
us with the skills to reach different levels of
achievement according to our "personal levels of
ability".
Question #2
I failed grade 9 and was going to quit last year,
but didn't. I went back to Grade 10 and did nothing
but warm a chair for the whole year. Should I quit
school?
Answer #2
I think you already quit in grade 10. There are, in
my opinion, two types of dropouts. The first kind are.
students who make a decision to quit school and actu-
ally do that. Then, there are dropouts (like you) who
attend school but are mentally "tuned out". They at-
tend school because they can't really make a decision
as to what they want to do. In the meantime, they not
only waste their time but the teacher's time'as well.
Most of us learn from our mistakes, but some of us
never put what we learn into corrective action. A very
important aspect of personality growth is making deci-
sions and being responsible• for carrying them out. In
your case,,you.have decidewhether to quit school or
return and accept the,,challenge in a responsible man-
ner. It's your decision. No one is going to make it for
you.
Question #3
I quit school two years ago in grade 11. I'm sorry for
that. I want to go back to school, but feel embarrassed
and a little uncertain. Should I try?
Answer #3
People who consistently think of themselves as fail-
ures usually remain that way. But if they decide to try,
they come to realize that: "Turning one's life around
can become a reality .rather than a perpetual dream".
