Mustangs take two
of three from ears>

The Madill Mustangs girls bas-
ketball teams took two of three
games from the visiting Seaforth
Golden Bears last Wednesday af-
ternoon.
The senior and junior Mustangs
were vic.orious while the midget
Mustangs played their first game
of the season and ended up on the
short side of the final score.
The senior Mustangs exploded
for 20 points in the final quarter to
post a 45-31 decision over the
Golden Bears.
Madill held a 17-15 lead at half-
time and were ahead by a slim 25-
23 margin at three-quarter time.
The victory evened the senior
Mustangs Huron County league
record at 1-1.
Coach Steve Merner said the
team's system is complicated, so it
will take a while for the players to
get used to it.

He added that Seaforth is the
second fastest team in Huron -
Perth, behind his Mustangs.
Because of the Mustangs speed
they were able to wear out the
Golden Bears in the first three pe-
riods, before erupting for 20 points
in the fourth quarter.
Angie Huber paced the Madill
offence with a 14 -point effort.
Mary Lisle contributed 10 points
and Sandra Murphy hooped eight
points.
Cheryl Thompson had six
points for Seaforth.
The junior Mustangs jumped
into a 6-0 lead early in the first pe-
riod, but were fortunate to be in
front by a 13-10 margin after one
,period.
Despite trailing throughout the
contest, the Seaforth juniors never
gave up, and came close to pulling
out a victory.
With the junior Mustangs hold-
ing a 36-26 lead going into the fi-
nal period, coach Chris Coulthard
gave starting centre Andrea Hiller
a rest. Seaforth got to within three
.points of the Mustangs, so' Hilder
went back into the game.
Seaforth pressed in the final
minute, ended up stealing the ball
but were unable to hoop the tying
basket.
The Mustangs led 23-18 at half-
time and were in front 36-26 going
into the final period.
Hiller paced the Madill victory
with a 301point performance. The
junior Mustangs improved their
league record to two wins. Mi-
chaela Johnston hooped five
points for Madill.
Samantha Lansink hooped a
dozen points for Seaforth with
Kass Murray adding 10 'points.
The Golden Bears took the mid-
get contest, 29-15 over the Mus-
tangs.
Natalie Torrie hooped eight
points for Madill with Chrissy
Kerr adding six points.
Caralie McCall had. 10 points
for Seaforth.

Madill claims own tournament title
Ten teams competed in the first
Madill invitational junior boys
volleyball tournament held on the
weekend.
The Madill Mustangs captured
the initial championship, outlast-
ing Stratford St. Michael's in three
games.
After winning the first game of
the final, 15-8, the Mustangs were
unable to pull out the victory in
game two as St. Michael's re-
bounded for a 15-12 decision. The
Mustangs came out spiking, espe-
cially power hitters Andrew Exel
and Mike Nolan, in the deciding
game, and cruised to a 15-6 win.
Yn semi-final play, the Mustangs
took two from North Middlesex of
Parkhill, 15-4 and 15-13, while St.
Michael's downed St. Marys, 15-
13 and 15-12.
Competing in Pool `B' the Mus-
tangs won every game in the
round-robin, opening the competi-
tion by sweeping Listowel 15-3•
and 15-3. Madill also defeated Wi-
arton 15-6, and 15-6; St. Marys
15-2 and 15-8; and Walkerton 17-
15, 15-8.
St. Marys was second in the
pool, beating Wiarton 15-7 and
15-12; Walkerton 15-5 and 15-3
and splitting with Listowel 15-13,
and 11-15.
St. Michael's took top honors in
Pool 'A' by beating Chesley 15-7
and 15-6, and Seaforth 15-0 and
15-6, and split with North Mid-
dlesex 10-15 and 15-1 and Kincar-
dine? -15 and 15-10.
North Middlesex was runner-up
in the pool, defeating Chesley 15-
12 and 15-10; and Seaforth 15-1
and 15-7; and splitting with Kin-
cardine 15-5 and 8-15.
Kincardine defeated Seaforth
and split with Chesley in Pool 'A'
play. Chesley downed Seaforth,
and ' Seaforth was winless in the
tourney.
In Pool 'B' play Wiarton defeat-
ed Listowel and split with Walker-
ton, Listowel defeated Walkerton,
and Walkerton just won a single
game.
In a I6 -team tournament in
Guelph, the week before, the jun-
ior Mustangs finished in the top
eight.

Pee Wee
girls win
Tri -County
crown
The Wingham Legion Pee Wee
girls capped a successful 1995 sea-
son last Wednesday by capturing
the Tri -County Pee Wee girls soft-
ball title.
The girls defeated Brussels 4-0
to win the championship series,
two gameso on9. The Pee Wees
finished the season a record of 17
wins, five losses and one tie.
Wingham jumped into a 3-0
lead in the fourth inning on a triple
by Marianne Pike, a walk to Jor-
danna Welsh, and doubles by
Chrissy Kerr and Terry Lynn
Schell.
The Pee Wees added an insu-
rance run in the seventh on a walk
to Kerr and a triple by Schell. Kerr
also pitched the shut out on the
mound, allowing three hits and
striking out 17.
In the first game of the series,
Jaime Baynton hurled a four -hitter
and fanned 17 as Wingham edged
Brussels 3-2. Brussels rebounded
to win game two, 7-6 in eight in-
nings to stretch the series to the
limit. Baynton had 16 strike outs
and allowed 11 hits in taking the
setback.
Earlier, Wingham had defeated
Bluevale in two' straight games,
and Belgrave in a hard-fought
three -game series to advance to
the final.

ry Lynn Schell, Marianne Pike,
Melanie Carter, Jordanna Welsh,
Patty Heibein, Kate Lane, Heather

ern and mid -western Ontario com-
peted in the invitational Madill
cross-country meet last Wednes-

The junior girls team of Kara
Pepper, Susan Bieman, Denise
Millen, and Nicole Waechter took
first place honors in a tightly
fought battle with Lambton Cen-
tral.
The strong junior. boys team
also placed first as Dennis Lub-
bers, John Deyell, Aaron Barrie,
Adam Schiestel, and Jason Pritch-
ard all placed in the top 10.
Sjaan Gerth took the midget
boys individual title as he finished
the race over half a minute ahead
of the runner-up.
The next meet for the Mustangs
will be today in Dorchester.
