Finals swim meet
held in Goderich
Kevin Schill swam to three first
place finishes in the boys open
category at the swim meet finals
held Saturday in Goderich.
He was first in the 100 -metre
freestyle, first in the 100 -metre
backstroke, and first in the 100 -
metre breaststroke.
Peter Dixon was first in the 11-
12 -year-old boys 50 -metre free-
style.
Marita Harinen was first in the
11 -12 -year-old girls 25 -metre
backstroke, second in the 50 -metre
freestyle, and third in the 25 -metre
breaststroke.
Matt Dixon was second in the
9 -10 -year-old boys 50 -metre free-
style.
Karen Schill recorded three
fourth place finishes in the girls
open category. She was fourth in
the 100 -metre freestyle, fourth in
the 100- metre backstroke, and
fourth in the individual medley.
Victoria Harinen was fourth in
the 9 -10 -year-old girls 50 -metre
freestyle and fifth in the 25 -metre
breaststroke.
Katrina Kaufman was fifth in
the 9 -10 -year-old girls 25 -metre
butterfly and fifth in the 50 -metre
freestyle.
The medley relay team of Na-
than MacTavish, Matt Dixon, Pe-
ter Dixon, and Sheena Baker
placed third.
Stingers blank
Steelhawks
to win playoff

Belmore Stingers took the open-
ing game of their Bluewater Fast -
ball League quarter -final series
against the Intermediate' Steel -
hawks.
Played last Thursday, the Sting-
ers scored a 4-0 decision over the
Steelhawks.
Dave Eadie was the winning
hurler with Ross Baird ,being
tagged with the loss.
Brian Busby went 3 -for -3 at the'
plate for the Stingers.
The second game in the series
was scheduled for Sunday, but it
was rained out. Game two was
played last night in Gorrie.
The Stingers are preparing for
the OASA Intermediate 'D' tour-
nament in Glencoe, Aug. 26-27
while the Steelhawks will play in
the Intermediate 'C' tournament in
Merlin on Aug. 26-27. •
The Steelhawks first game is
against Caledonia oq Aug. 26 at
8:30 a.m.
Colts lose
first game
to Clifford
Clifford 4 Aces scored two runs
in the bottom of the eighth inning
Thursday evening to score a 4-3
decision over the Wingham Colts
in the first game of the best two of
three Bluewater Fastball League
quarter -final series.
Reg Walls picked up the deci-
sion on the mound for Clifford.
Bill Haines started on the mound
for the Colts and lasted four in-
nings before being relieved by Ja-
son Daw.
The second game in the series
was played last night at the Jose-
phine Street ballpark in Winghatt•
Game three, if necessary, will be
played tomorrow at the Josephine
Street ballpark.

give Squirt Reds victory
The Wingham Legion Squirts
took on the Wingham Optimist
Squirt Reds last Thursday in the
first game of the Tri -County
League playoffs.
The Legion Squirts had finished
the regular season in first place,
with the Squirt Reds placing
fourth with a 11-5,2 record. The
Reds scored a total of 266 runs
during the season and gave up 159
runs to opposing teams.
Kent Readman topped the home
run parade with four, followed by
Matt Dinning and Kevin Waechter
with two each, and Duane Schies-
tel and Jason Schut with one.
The Squirt Reds won the open-
ing game of the best two of three
playoff series against the Legion
Squirts, 8-7.
The Optimist Squirts scored
four runs in their final at bat to
take the lead. The Legion ,Squirts
scored twice in their last at -bat,
but for the third time in the game,
left the bases loaded.
The turning point of the game
came in the third inning when the
Legion squad had the bases loaded
and nobody out only to have Ke-
vin Waechter strike out three con-
secutive batters to pitch out of a
jam. Waechter pitched a . strong
game for the Optimist squad, fin-
ishing with nineltrike outs.
Zack O'Krafka took the pitch-
ing loss for the Legion squad as he
three five strong innings, but some
"seeing -eye" hits and a few un—
timely
timely errors proved costly.
Scoring runs for the Optimist
Squirts were Waechter with a pair,
and singles by Schiestel, Kris
Wickens, Dinning, Readman, Sean
English, and Justin McKinley.
Scoring runs for the Legion
squad were Garrett Skinn with two

Ironmen, Bulls prepare for season
training camps begin next weekend
It may only be the middle of
August, but the Wingham Ironmen
and the Brussels Bulls of the
Western Junior 'C' Hockey
League are preparing for the 1995-
96 season.
The Ironmen have affiliated
with the Listowel Junior 'B' Cy-
clones of the Midwestern Junior
'B' Hockey League for this sea-
son.
Coach Bill Brown and assistant
coach Doug Neil will have to se-
lect this year's team from the
roughly 140 players who have
been invited to the Ironmen train-
ing camp, beginning Saturday,
Aug. 26 at the Listowel Arena.
Skaters will be on the ice from
5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The second session goes from
5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug.
27.
The Ironmen have seven pre-
season exhibition games lined -up
to get the players ready for. the 30 -
game regular sea on.
The first exhibition game will
be played Friday, Sept_ 8 at 8:30
pan. when they face off against
the Wiarton Wolves at the Port Els
gin Arena. League champion
Mount Forest Patriots will take on
the Ironmen at the Listowel Arena
on Saturday, Sept: 9 at 7:30 p.m.
The Ironmen play a home -and -
home series with Erin on Sept. 16-
17. They play atk_the Listowel Are-
na at 7:30 p.m. do Sept. 16 and
then travel to Erin for a I p.m.
game on Sunday, Sept. 17.
The Ironmen conclude the pre-
season with three games in three
days. The team travels to Arthur
on Sept. 22 for an 8 p.m. game
against the Grand Valley Forest-
ers, then travel to Ayton on Sept.
23 for an 8 p.m. game against the
Patriots, and then are in Listowel
on Sept. 24 for a 1 p.m. game
against Grand Valley.
The Ironmen open the regular
season at home on Friday, Sept. 29
when they play the Bulls at 830
p.m. at the Lockridge Memorial
Arena.
The Brussels Bulls have invited
113 rookies as well as returning
veterans to their training camp at
the Seaforth Arena. The camp's
first session will be held on Fri-
day, Aug. 25 from 7 to 10 p.m,
The Bull hopefuls are on the ice
from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug.
26 and Sunday, Aug. 27.
First year coach Jim Bridges
will put the Bulls rookies through
their first exhibition contest on
Friday, Sept. 1 when they play the
rookie Seaforth Junior 'D' Centen-
naires at 8 p.m. in the Seaforth
Arena.
The Bulls have scheduled four
exhibition games for the pre-
season. '
The Bulls play New Hamburg
in their first exhibition encounter
•,at the Columbia Ice Field in Wa-
terloo at 7 p.m. on Sept. 9.
The Bulls are in Seaforth on
Sept. 17 as they take on the Kin-
cardine Bulldogs at 1:30 p.m. The
Bulls make the trip to Kincardine
on Sept. 22 for an 8:30 p.m. game
against the Bulldogs.
The final pre -season contest for
the Bulls will be played Sunday,
Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. in the Seaforth
Arena against New Hamburg.

Brent Robinson hurled a perfect
game last Wednesday evening as
Belgrave Midgets shut out Mitch-
ell 6-0 in game four of their
WOAA Midget playdown series.
• The victory gave the best three
of five semi-final series to Bel -
grave, three games to one.
Robinson faced the minimum
required batters, 21, in posting the
victory. He recorded 10 strike
outs.
Eric Andrew made a dandy play
at second' base and Dan Gusso-
made a nice catch in left field to
preserve the perfect game.
Belgrave scored one in the first

by Robinson and Joel Pegg. They
added one more in the fourth and
blew the game open with four in
the fifth to close out the scoring.
Belgrave will face either Wrox-
