Lisle, Campbell congratulated
Dear Editor:
I read with interest your last
week's report of the accomplish-
ments of Julie Lisle at the Junior
National Track and Field Champi-
onships at British Columbia.
Having been involved with pole
vaulting for several years I was par-
ticularly interested in Julie setting
the Junior Women's Canadian
record in the vault. I am sure we all
congratulate Julie on this accom-
Media coverage
vindictive,
says letter writer
Dear Editor:
In opening, I send my respect
and thank -you to several of our
public citizens who •have stood in
support of our local physician and
two nurses who have been recently
implicated for a failure to report
child abuse.
The initial media coverage of
this issue would lead all to believe
that:
1. There was no intention to report
a case of abuse.
2,. Medical personnel had "some-
thing to hide".
Of utmost importance in trauma
management is "The Golden
Hour". By this, I refer to the fact
that medical management of the pa-
tient during the first hour post-
trauma ultimately determines their
recovery status. Regardless of our
profession, our first concern must
be immediate treatment of the trau-
ma victim's injuries„end provision
of a safe environment.
The editorial in the August 2 is-
sue entitled "Doesn't Anyone Care
About the Kid?” suggests that peo-
ple were not concerned for the in-
jured child's condition. I don't be-
lieve the media has access to that
information for public inquiries. It
is confidential. The assumption that
no one cares for the child's condi-
tion, based on a lack of newspaper
office inquiries, is a vindictive and
unjust assumption,
The bare truth is that articles
such as these sell next week's pub-.
lication, without concern for the
feelings of anyone; be it .victim,

plishment as well as her silver med-
al in the heptathlon. A lot of hard
work and dedication has been add-
ed to her natural ability.
I think another person who de-
serves congratulations at this time
is her pole vault coach Bob Camp-
bell. With Julie's record jump, Mr.
Campbell now has coached the
present Canadian record holders in
Women's Junior, Men's Junior, and
Men's Senior pole vault. Few other
coaches can claim such success.
Even though Mr. Campbell re-
tired from the F.E. Madill staff
some five years ago, he remains ac-
tive in coaching pole vault at the
schools. .
Congratulations and well done to
Julie'Lisle and Bob Campbell.

GORRIE--It didn't seem like
work when a group of people
turned out at the old mill site here
a few weeks ago. But it was work
— a full Saturday morning of
work.
Besides cleaning out a three-
storey mill which has been board-
ed up for many years, enthusiastic
parents and children catalogued
machinery.
If they didn't know what they
were looking at, they described it
as best they could. One massive
piece of equipment on the ground
floor was unknown, even to an ex-
pert who dropped by to have a
look.
Before the old machines and
equipment were set back against
the walls of the building, their
original positions were noted on a
grid plan of the floor. Photographs
were also taken of the equipment.
The old Gorrie Mill which has
stood on the same spot on the
south bank of the Maitland River
for well over a hundred years has
turned, into the Maitland Mill Pro-
ject, co-sponsored by Howick
Township volunteers and the
Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority.
The aim of the project is to re-
store the old mill and turn the site
into a historic and cultural re-
source. The first phase of the pro-
ject is to have the mill and its gift
shop open in May 1996.
By the year 2006, which is
Howick's 150th birthday, the com-
mittee plans. to have the mill ma-
chinery operational for demon-
stration purposes only.
GOOD KNOWLEDGE.
As is. usually the "case when a
community takes on a restoration
project, besides enthusiasm and a
willingness to work, a considera-
ble amount of specialized knowl-
edge surfaces.
Jim Hopkins of RR 1, Gorrie
who heads the Mill and Machine
Committee is knowledgeable in
the tool and die trade. His assist-
ant, Ron Henhoeffer of RR 1,
Gorrie is a millwright. The project

has tumed into a labor of love for
the two men.
Linda Henhoeffer and Howick
Twp. Coun. Rosemary Rognvald-
son are credited with spearhead-
ing the project. Diane Hopkins is
just as enthusiastic as her hus-
band, and her two sons; all were
on hand to help on clean-up day.
Besides the Henhoeffer and
Hopkins families and Coun.
Rognvaldson, Rev. Jeff Hawkins

ject from the start, was also ons
hand to shovel and sweep years of
dirt out of thecold mill.
Besides the manual work at the
mill, the Maitland Valley Conser-
vation Authority has engaged the
services of a student to research
the old mill.
Hired under a summer employ-
ment program, the student, Mary
Feldskov, is a native of Howick
Township with a special interest.
